"List Price" and gear purchase excuses

I think I know why manufacturers have "list prices" that are way about actual street value. I know I'm not the only person with a significant other to come home with a new piece of gear and claim it was just too good of a sale to pass up. Show her the $2500 list price and be like, "Honey I got it for only $1500. If I'd bought you that necklace instead, I would have ended up paying the full $2500 later on, and I really need it to discombobulate the polarity of the phasing diaphram."

Works every time.
I love list prices.

I stay single. That way I don't have to worry (:

Just me and my slutty studio.

Without a significant other, who would set up the mics?

Guys , Guys you got it all wrong. You just have to find the right lady.

I had a full studio built in my basement before we even had a dining room table.

So my wife and I go out for our Anniversary (9 years!!!). We finish dinner and I tell her that I need to go to the office to pick up a few things

I had been setting up my new rig - I had just finished testing everything out and was ready to swap it out for my existing rig.

Needless to say my wife spent the next 2 hours helping me tear apart my rig and loading in the car. Now that , my friend is way more effective and fufilling than breaking down and loading your own gear BY YOURSELF on a Friday night!!

It's true- I knew I was onto a winner when the missus had been in South America for 4 months and I flew out to spend christmas with her... I got off the plane in Sao Paulo and she says: "Hi honey- great to see you... youre gonna love this street I found yesterday, its just electronics and music shops. Lets drop your stuff at the hotel and go look round!"

Sometimes in Europe we're lucky when we get some gears at US list price, true !

Its certainly not uncommon that US gear just gets the $ sign changed to £ and the numbers stay the same!

There was a music store in Chicago I used to visit once in a while (never bought anything there though). They had a trick that really bothered me.

They'd put up big posters advertising the gear, with prices way over list. They would then let you talk them down to manufacturers list price. If you walked in there without having done your research you were certain to get screwed, or at the very least pay list.

They also did a whole thing where if you wanted to negotiate the price they would take you to a back room with the manager. But first they would make you wait for a while. Once you were ushered into the office, the manager would sit behind his desk in front of you and usually a salesman or two would kind of crowd you from behind. Any attempt to negotiate would be met with disbelief on their part, they were really hard boiled. If you brought up legitimate prices you were offered from other stores they would get practically belligerent. I tried negotiating with them once and it got really intense. Walked out without spending any money, too.

Amazingly, this store was quite successful.

Someone who advertises here claiming US listprices, charged me 20% over listprice on some AEA gear - thats after I got a "break" of over 30%.
then I asked to demo a new product and they got cranky and told me just to buy it untried - its only $1500...
The Grace importer here also does not have demos of any grace gear, but charge way over list.

I buy from Italy now - those guys understand business.

When my girlfriend comes home with a bunch of shopping bags, she'll tell me that she saved a couple hundred bucks.

So I tell her "that's great! you saved two hundred dollars? Where is it?"

My wife and I have a working agreement...we don't discuss prices. At least not for furniture, clothes or music gear. thumbsup

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about. We're moving into our new house soon, and the first order of business is converting the spare bedroom (which has a walk in closet that is the perfect size for a small vocal booth) into a little studio, then we can start thinking about that furniture stuff. For some of us sluts without slutty budgets, an understanding wife is a wonderful thing. The best part of all was when she said I wasn't allowed to make it look "makeshift" Ok, honey, but I'll need a bigger budget. I'll post pictures when I get started.

I had similar experience with smooth approval of spending, later she admitted that she is quite happy that I spend time in studio and not in bars (like before).
