Editing Audio in Logic vs. Pro Tools

Hey guys!

I'm researching DAW possibilities for Mac based systems and am curious about the audio editing capabilities and interface in Logic. I've used it a bit for MIDI stuff, but never really dug into the audio capabilities.

How does Logic match up to PT as an audio system, and specifically how does the audio editing interface stand up? Let's ignore the native/host and industry-standard debates on this and let's also ignore MIDI completely and just discuss Logic as a multitrack recording, playback, and editing machine...I just want to know about the ergonomics of recording and editing audio from a purely functional point of view. Is Logic's audio editing system object based like PT? Are there object handles on the waveforms like PT(especially with a supertool approach)? How about plugin architecutre? Playlist functionaly? Any issues with mixing, monitoring? Etc. Etc.

Thanks!

Mike

There are a lot of threads on this. But I know the search function is screwed up... so.....

Depends on what you're doing. I just editted a bands drums tracks in Logic and was going to shoot myself. Pro Tools is simply better than Logic when it comes to handling audio.

On the other hand... composing a track in Logic is a breeze. I love it. It's a fantastic composition tool. My advice would be, wait for Logic 8, or go with Nuendo. Nuendo's got it's sh*t together on both sides. YMMV

I own both and when it comes to audio editing PT has what it takes. I pull my hair out to do simple things in Logic that would require a few simple steps in PT. Mostly there is no playlist function in Logic and I just can't live without it. But ergonimically I just like editing in PT better. You really need to try it for yourself in both programs and see which one speaks to you.

i own both and can't understand what people mean by Logic's audio handling/editing not being all that. however, i trained on logic for six months before being allowed to do a session. i don't know pro tools like that, therefore i think PT is a drag - of course!
outside of Logic, i much prefer the audio editing in Nuendo thumbsup

I used ProTools since PT3. I switched to Logic about 2 years ago. I LOVE Logic, but intense audio editing is smoother and quicker and has a faster response in ProTools. Because of this, if forced me to play better and get better takes when using Logic (because I didn't want to deal with micro editing in Logic). So it's all worked out for the best. ProTools was making me lazy.

i would say between PT and Logic that pro tools rules in the audio editing department, just the speed and ease of use. Logic rules in the MIDI and soft synth department though. I use Logic for MIDI and soft synth stuff and Pro Tools for all editing, recording, and mixing stuff.

I would agree that Nuendo or Digital Performer are the more all around programs, the best of both worlds.

I think you mentioned you are on a mac, in which case you can exclude Nuendo. And Stienburg's mac support has improved, but it's not great.

For sheer audio editing; pro tools is the easiest for me. With most of the questions you are asking, Pro Tools is the editing king.

I use pro tools at work, and I compose in Logic and Ableton, though.

Hi
I do a lot of audio edits & I find Digital Performer quite handy on this side (except if I need a good sound replacer !).
But Performer doesn't seem to be very popular in US. (I wonder why btw ?)
IMHO, it's a very good tool & very stable since the 4.61 version & obviously it works perfectly with a Mac (OS X.3.9 here)
cheers

Seb

Definitely a big vote for performer as well; I think it's a best of both worlds situation, if that's what you want.

DP is by far the most balanced App.
The midi end was always great and they did a good job of copying PT's audio side.

If you are familiar with editing audio on PT then DP will seem real familiar to you.

That said I love the way Logic handles VI's. I am hoping for a killer Logic 8 upgrade in regards to editing audio. Hopefully in the arrange window.

DP is far more popular than most in this forum realize.

i adore logic, use it every day, and editing audio on it is painful at best. every damn snip and splice and edge edit has to be done twice, because the arrange window is not sample accurate.

dp is so vastly better in this regard it makes me cry. but i compose in the daw, and use reaktor and a few other VI's intensely, and logic has it nailed in those regards.

i may start mixing in dp again, although logic has some badass automation features and is way more cpu efficient.

the solution is simple: compose in logic, track and edit in dp, mix in logic.

i use both and logic is far better. for me at least because i have pass the learning curve and i have tuned my key commands to meet my different editing needs.
like some key commands imitate some of the pro tools which are good but also added some other ones that are awsome. just cut or add whole chorus sections while moving the rest of the song with one key comand while in PT 3 or 4 steps for example.
you also have folder tracks where you put inside and edit 20 tracks at once. (nuendos version is better though but still a cool feature)

playlists are a bit dogdy in logic but its used diferently to comp tracks.

also, ull only have audiosuite capabilities if u have HD hardware.

but again, u only pay 1000 bucks or half if u r a student and youll have way more stuff for the price.

pro tools you can get the mbox for 500 or digi for 1000 but almost no plugins.

I teach Logic ay UCLA Extension and it is a great compositional app and terrific package. However, there is no doubt in my mind that for audio editing PT still comes out ahead. Also mixing from an engineer's point of view.
