57 on hats?

Does anyone regularly use a 57 on a hi-hat?

I have a morning session and most my SDC's are loaned out. I'm thinking of throwing a mic up on the hat.

I have several LDC's that I could use, but a 57 seems like a safe bet - anything I need to know?

Thanks!

I use 57's on hat's live all the time. Just position it facing away from your snare and cut your bottom end and you'll get pretty decent isolation. Give it a gentle boost around 8k for a nice sizzle. Oh, and since the 57 is a Cardiod mount it either 3 or 4" above or below your hat so you'll lose the proximity effect of the air coming from from the hat.
Good Luck

At a pinch maybe, but I'd much prefer an MD441. Guess it depends what else you've got on hand.

Try it...... you might like it.
Not my personal taste though.

If you've got LDC's available, why not try fig. 8 over the hats?
You need to make sure that the back of the mic isn't pointing towards the underside of a cymbal, but to me that's more of an acceptable hats sound than a 57.

Depends on the track. Punk - YEAH! Rock- Can be really cool. Jazz - Only if it's retro sounding. Clean sounding Pop drums - No way. R&B - maybe... not the clean stuff though.

It's got a strange and sometimes really cool sound to it. Kinda retro garage band (but in a VERY acceptable way) You can also do cool things to it too... i.e. eq it to high hell, crush it with a compressor, distort it etc... That's been my experience. YMMV.

Good luck with your session.

rugged and decent hi-freq response... maybe even a cut somewhere to tame the harshness...

why not?

If I have to mic the hat for rock stuff (which is rare!) I'll reach for a 57 or an SM7 before a pencil condensor. But I hate super bright hats anyway...unless it's a fusiony Will Calhoun type of drummer where we need all the detail and 'chink' from the hats.

I always end up EQ'ing the snot out of 'em no matter what mic I put up...so maybe it doesn't matter! LOL

i did!

I have used a 57 in conjunction with a SDC to catch the closed-hat details in certain beats. Normally end up only using the mic for certain sections of the song that may need extra definition on the hat.

I like the rock bite of a 57 on hats better than the tink tink sound of a sdc...that high end info is usually in the oh already.

I use the 57 on hats often.

The light, high hz are captured by the OH already and I'm usually looking to suplement those with the darker lower sounds of the close 57.

i really just never cared for micing a hihat. "sizzle" is all that is it, because if i did mic the friggen thing i'd hi pass it at something stupid like 470hz. i'm a much bigger fan of just putting up another room mic or a pzm on the floor or wall.

A 57 will work on just about anything in a pinch. Even caught my girlfriend using it for something unexpected the other day.

I ended up using a C1 (cause it's bright Chinese) on the hat, and I EQ'd it a lot. Pretty good sound.

Thanks all. The 57 wasn't what I wanted on it.

I like 57's on hats.
I can bash away if I use the connector end.
But for a nice "chick" I like to use the cap end.

My wife tells me I'm hung like a KM84, and wishes she had married a C12.

A C12 doesn't have the girth of a U47, or even a 251... so I'm told.

You beat me to it! Usually 800Hz and down is gone.

Although, this thread inspires me to try using it to get some meat out of the hats. And the SM57 sounds like a great choice for that application. Everyone who talks about the overheads catching the high-highs raises a wonderful point. I've just never been able to get midrange in my hats and have it sound normal. I guess it's a new quest!

SM57's as overheads. I bet I could get a decent tone out of two sm57 overheads into my new BG-1. Has anyone ever stooped this low, or am I too high?

You can use 57s for overs, and even room mics. Not bad at all.
