Nelly Furtado's new record starts with an awful feedback loop

Anyone else hear this? I brings back so many bad memories of me patching the wrong thing into another wrong thing and then WHAM! a lovely blast of feedback comes out of the speakers. Why would they do this? It's subtle and never fully materializes, but you can't mistake that sound. UGHHH.

It's her attempt to "Fly Like A Bird" to the land of hip hop and street credibility.

I don't think it will work, but never underestimate the the buying public.

What's next, Pavoratti doing country?

Never underestimate the idiotic arrogance of the music industry pros.

With 7-10 million cd sales under her belt, Nelly Furtado already has street credibility.

To be fair, she was always banging on about her hiphop 'roots' from day one. She had a guest spot on a Jurassic 5 album a couple of years back...

back in the day before she was ever near signed she was pretty amazing. She had always belnded pop/hip-hop and rap. She used to break out into rap in Portugese out of nowhere in the middle of a song.

I don't mind the new single

"Nelly Furtado's new record starts with an awful feedback loop"...

And continues with an awful goat bleat. In other words, the entire album.

That's called irony - see, because the music industry pros are the only people who'd call someone a legitimate artist because of her CD sales. Madonna, what what?

Her last record showed a lot of growth. When I saw her on SNL with Timberland doing the single off of her new album, I thought it was a bad joke.

Obviously she is aiming for the lowest common denominator with her new record. Guess she's content with showing she can 'ho' it up with the best of them.

As much as that sucks, she IS the number most requested artist on Rhapsody right now. I personally think she's selling out to keep her record contract. Aren't some of the songs themselves called Permiscuous or something?

actually she can't. I saw that show, and I felt she was strangely unconvincing as a sexpot, like a bank teller going as a hooker for Halloween.

The single comes off as so poorly written to me. It's like she and Timbaland didn't even try.

i've got a few tracks of nelly pre-major-label, just her and a spanish guitarist and an upright bass player. she sings in a natural voice, not the pinched nosetone on her studio releases; the songs are completely unconventional in structure, with no regard to pop formulae; and her lyrics, delivery, and personality are undeniably gifted.

i think she was 17 or 18 when she made the recordings. i keep waiting for the day when she shrugs off the label influences and gets down to her true badass self... it's gonna be a sweet day, the lady has serious talent.

the record seems to have the 'dance floor' mentality that loveangelmusicbaby had for gwen stefani. although the tunes don't seem to have the same strength as the latter, i don't think it's any less honest of a record for her. she always seemed to exude a sort of dance/electronic element. maybe this one is a bit more focused effort...?

who's to say... a lot of them make my head bobb, and a hell of a lot of others too!

Starts with a feedback loop, continues with a bunch of crappy songs, and ends with giving me a headache.

I listened to the whole thing 2x in a row on a road trip. I was expecting something much better from Nelly + Timbaland.

how many of you guys would love to see one of the checks that nelly, timbo, danja, or anybody else involved in the production of this album is gonna recieve in a couple months? it seems like everywhere i look someone is making negative comments about something that someone else is doing. i hardly ever hear the people who are getting placements and credits on major albums like nelly's complaining about another person's sub-par work. maybe we can all take a lesson from them. i've found that the more CHECKS i cash, the less time i put into CHECKING up on someone else.tutt

Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it a bad record/song. I thought the start with "feedback loop" was kinda funny.

conversely, just because my opinion doesn't have the power to render a piece of art bad doesn't mean the piece of art isn't, in truth, a bad piece of art.

my point is not that standards determine the truth, but that perhaps they reflect it. i'm not sure there's a universal consensus on whether the brutal torture of living things that feel pain is inherently a good or bad thing, but i do have a sense that there's a truth about its reality that exists independently of people's feelings about it.

might not the same be true of everything else in the universe?

I was looking for whatever the song in question on my 'scription service (the song "Permiscuous" is listed but doesn't play) ... I couldn't find it (I guess) but I DID find a track (on her 2003 Folklore album) that has the freakin' Kronos Quartet AND Bela Fleck and still manages to be pretty boring and cookie cutter... I can only imagine that Kronos and Bela laffed all the way to the bank. I hope. (It's not really like either added anything. The banjo part I focused on seemed particularly lethargic. I'm not a huge Fleck fan but I don't usually think of him as lethargic.)

I'd heard her name for years but -- thanks to my some-think-it's-uncanny ability to completely avoid/ignore 99.9+% of pop music -- I'd never heard her.

So I decided it was time...

Sometimes when I do that, I find that I've been missing something. Who'd ha' thunk that I'd like the Dixie Chicks, Black Eyed Peas, or Modest Mouse? I know I was surprised. Usually the more familiar a name is before I hear their music, the less I'm gonna like 'em, I've noticed. But I don't think it's reactionism on my part. I mean, in that case I'd utterly despise the DC or BEP. But once I'd heard them -- I didn't at all.

But this time it just confirmed the weary expectations of uninspiring music-industrial-complex product that normally keeps me from even clicking on those pretty, vacant faces on the MusicMatch On Demand front page...

[PS... come to think of it, I heard someone else mention the years-ago small ensemble with a then-teenage Furtado. That sounds like something I'd like to hear... ]

sorry, I couldn't help but laugh when I read that...

She is loaded with talent, but I was quite surprised by the direction on this album. After the maturity shown on the last record, I didn't think she would stoop to skankville...especially after recently having a daughter. The lyrics to that song could have been written by a 13 year old hitting puberty... "You know what I want
And I got what you need"...give me a break.

She's still only young; I'm sure she'll rebound.
Then again if it's all about making money; she's right on target.

I'm starting to rant; time to stop.

Rant on man ... and sorry, not meaning to offend ...

But if folks think this gal is loaded with talent ... they need to get out more ... ALOT more ...

For example, invite her to any small/large Folk Festival ... put her up against 99% of the artists ... young and old (who's average income is less than the parking attendant) ... and she'd sound laughable ...

And don't get me going on that SNL "performance" ... backing tracks and faking musicians ... good God !!!

jls.
