That is probably an early 2000s import from taiwann. when they first started importing them, they had those badges on them. The american Gretsch guys got mad because people might mistake them for the American Gretsch's, so they had to change them. Thus the new Renown import kit says Renown on the badge.

I have a mini kit that they custom made for me (Gretsch) and the inside of the shells are unfinished like that one. They are maple on my kit, and look like they could be maple on that kit as well. Those are the Rims system they use on the import drums, as well as the bass drum mount. So the only question is whether or not those shells are maple.

Either way they will KIIIIIIILL your ludwig rockers. I love the Gretsh renown kits, most of the time even more than the american ones. Engineers consistently flip on them. That does look like a thick wrap though, that might be a tone killer.

Ah. I don't think those are maple. The Renown kits have wood hoops on the bass drums, and never have wrapped finishes. I know for certain that that is probaly circa 2002ish (thats when they started using that bass drum mount for the toms). Before then they shipped them without mounts on the bass drum, but then dealers started requesting them. All the other import kits (non renown) are mahogany I believe.

The mahogany shells still sound killer though.

the one picture of the inside of a tom definitely does NOT look like mahogany...i could be wrong, but it looks like a hard wood with nice grain. i'd guess maple.

(though that close up of the inside of the bass drum actually looks a little different, but that could be photography)

either way, if they sound good, AWESOME

Hi Adam.....

It's definitely one of the early Tiawanese-made kits.
I believe it is in fact a mahogany shell. At least that's what Gretsch said in their marketing blurb. (There are different kinds on mahogany- the type used for 60's Ludwig kits and the like is much darker)
The earlier poster is correct about the badge.
The line was called the Catalina Stage series (there was also a Catalina Elite, and a Renown Maple range at the same time all with the same badge, but different features.)

This kit was the entry level kit which Gretsch released around 2000. Note the lack of die-cast hoops, and the non-matching bass drum hoops.

It was discontinued a couple of years after it came out, and replaced by the current kit called simply 'Catalina'

If it sounds good, and you got a good price then that's cool!!

BTW that DAC-1 rules..... thanks man!!
