Proper Setup for Multi-buss mixing

During Michael Brauer's guest month he talked about his multi-buss system... I have since applied it with pretty cool results... one thing he never explained fully is how he calibrated his busses.. He mentioned something about sending a 1K tone to each buss and making sure they read Zero... can anyone who understands the need for this and the background behind it explain it futher?

thanks!
