Sync Question?

As you can see from my signature I am running a 002R. I have a Rosetta 200 that I use for my main two i/o (vocals, instruments what ever). I also have a digimax 96 that I use to record my drum set.

Now in my understanding and limited expirience I have found that when recording from an ADAT source that device has to be the clock source in order for ADAT to properly sync with other digital devices(the 002R in this case).

Both the 200 and the digimax 96 have wordclock i/o on them. I am going to assume that this is for syncing to an external clock when using the AES outputs of the digimax at sample rates above 48k.

Now the question comes in: Can I wordclock the two devices together and sync my 48k ADAT output of the digimax 96 to my Rosetta 200?

Clear as mud right?

I don't have a 75 ohm bnc cable for this to try it but I will make or get one if it will work. It may not make any difference in sound quality to clock adat from the Rosetta but someone asked me the question and got me thinking. And I said "you know......................I don't know".

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Rosetta200

i am looking at the new rosetta 200. i think you should be able to........

set your 002r to clock from spidif (rosetta).

connect the wordclock out of the rosetta to wordclock in on the digimax.

set the digimax to external clock (word out of the rosetta).

connect the spidif out of the 002r to the spidif in on the rosetta.

connect the analog outs of the rosetta to your monitor matrix.

i am thinking this thing can act as A/D, WORDCLOCK, AND D/A all at the same time.

if anyone can confirm this, please do.

also if anyone is using this, how does it sound?

thanks.

Thanks for your input. The connectivity is not in question. I know how to plug them together, I just want to know if you can clock an adat source externally using wordclock.

i think it is the same difference if not better to sync everything from the rosetta.

just change your clock in pro tools to spidif (to clock from the rosetta),

and set the digimax to external to clock from the rosetta wordclock.

this way, everything is synced to the rosetta.

i dont have one so i dont know if it will work,

but if it does, and if it makes a great difference,

i want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

do you have the same one in that link above?

thanks.

Lightbulb sync

If the digimax has a word clock input, then the only question is can it use that as its sync source when using the digimax's ADAT output. The answer to that question lies in the manual for the digimax. If the answer to that question is yes, then you have the answer to your initial question.

Hey! Wow! You know your exactly right. Why didn't I think of that? There I go leaning on the brain trust that is Gearslutz.

I just wondered if anyone here had some practical expirience this kind of a setup.

Let me find that manual.

I don't have any adat tape machines. I have a digidesign 002R that has an 8 channel lightpipe adat i/o. My question is: Since the 002R does not have wordclock i/o, but the rosetta and the digimax 96 do, can you clock the digimax to the rosetta using wordclock bnc cables when recording from the digimax to the 002R using the "adat lightpipe" format? With the 002R getting it's clock sync from the rosetta over s/pdif i/o.
BTW I read the manual and it was not very helpful. Certainly you can clock from an external source but will the 002R sync up with out wordclock i/o?

macr0w,
Nice to see you around dude...
Quite simple really,
Have the Rosetta 200 always as the master clock, never turn it off. Take the BNC WC out into the Digimax WC in. Have that on external..always.
Feed SPDIF from the Rosetta to the 002R, and the ADAT from your Digimax to the lightpipe in into the 002.
Depending on what source you are recording from...select the PT input accordingly. If all boxes are always on just leave the PT / 002 on SPDIF external clock sync.
Of course you already know about matching the sample rates throughout the entire system..

Good luck man,
and see you on da "other side"

Thanks Andrew, I haven't tried it yet but I wasn't sure if the 002 would sync being that it's not in the wordclock loop so to speak. I thought you had to wc all devices in the chain?
See you on the other side my friend.
