RAM = Delay compensation?

I just bought some PSP plug ins, Master Pack to be exact. I love the way they sound...

but...

MasterQ has a processing delay that is a bit high, and PT LE does not have delay compensation . Unusable in individual tracks.

I use a G5 2.0 Dual 512mb - If I increase my RAM will the latency be smaller?

Thanks in advance!

Nope. Latency is a fact of life with DAWS, and it's usually a software setting in your soundcard driver. If you set it too short, you system won't have the CPU resources and will click or ser. So it's a user choice, and I don't think it's wise to shoot for the lowest possible latency setting.

PTLE is a retarded DAW. You can get excellent freeware DAWs that offer full plugin delay compensation. It's simply marketing laziness that Digidesign don't pull their finger out and join the '00's like everyone else. World domination and all that.

You need to measure the delay caused by each of your plugins, and then get some sample delay plugins and apply them to all your other tracks, so you can delay them to align up. Major PITA? Yes sir!

That PSP stuff is real nice. I'm just pleased to run the VST versions in Cubase SX3, with full plug-in delay compensation.

What the hell is wrong with the word t.u.t.t. ? (Especially when you are simply trying to write the word "s.t.u.t.t.e.r"?)

Somebody please enlighten me - what is the word that dare not speak it's name? I'm familiar with most 4 letter words, but what is this word?

Censorship always draws maximum attention the thing that you are trying to cover up. Stooopid.

T.U.T.T.

So, if the DLY is 35 ms in one track and 50ms on another I´ll have to DLY all tracks with 50ms except the one with 35ms, that I would have to DLY it for 15ms. Is that right?

PITA? I loved PT... until this day

At least I won´t have to save money for those little green card type stuff that goes inside the computer... ow, ram!

Yes, that would be right. It's much nicer to have this calculated and applied automatically, like most DAWs including freeware do.

With some things it's critical - like multiple mics on a drumkit. With other tracks you might no notice it - especially backing vocals, which could benefit from being slightly delayed anyway. When listening to a real band or orchestra, the differences in delay caused by the distance from speakers/players and the speed of sound varies all over the place. It's not always a problem. If a player was rushing, it might even help.

In some ways, aligning the phase of everything up can cause an accumulation of peaks, that are a problem with digital. Letting things get a bit loose might actually sound acceptable.

But basically - it's a problem, and most people see it that way except Digidesign. But as a mere LE user, they can afford to piss on you.

Definetely.

The problem is that is not a bit of DLY, a bit of phase cancelation, it is a BIG DLY I used on Snare and it went far away in the mix... huge phase problems. That´s really sad, ´cause PSP eq´s sounds sooooo good to me but they tendo to have a lot of latency, that i.e. Channel Strip doesn´t so... don´t know what to do.

But in the end Digi´s fault!

i use neon on almost every song i do these days... great sounding eq.. if you think you have issues now.. try in in LP(linear phase mode) then you'll really hear latency.
i use it with in nuendo 3.. no issues at all...perhaps its time to move to another daw lol my PT system hasn't been turned on in 7 months

This is why it's called pro-stools
Without joking though, does anyone knows why Digidesign is so crap (Is it a software architecture issue?)
It make me think of Microsoft, an other company with a quasi monopole, not because of the quality of their OS but just because they've been lucky...
At least here in Europe, the alternatives are more widely used than in the US(Nuendo/cubase/Logic)
Sorry for the rant...
Good luck
