Distortion Unit for Mixing

I mix mainly ITB, and often like to add some distortion on drums, vocals, etc.

I have been using the Amplitube plug in, though I am not crazy about it.

I've decided that I would like to buy a hardware unit to patch in as an aux send.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an easy to use, versatile unit that fits the bill for using distortion while mixing?

I am considering the Pod Pro and Sans Amp... also open to any other suggestions.

The pod is the worst sounding piece of shit I have ever used in my life. Don't listen to anyone who says "you just need to tweak it". It always sounds bad and super fake. I had one for a year before selling it. An engineer that I was working with in a pro studio used it for an eletric guitar track (since our original amped one was out of tune) and was the worst guitar sound I ever heard in my life. I couldn't believe he coiuld actually work in a studio accepting such a poor sound actually. Never tried the sans amp. Is there amp software out there that can work a mic around a simulated amp? Like a lot of drum programs could do...That would be best for making it sound most realistic. Guitars for me are very easy to tell when there done fake...

I made this a few years ago:

It's a rackmount chassis with a russian Big Muff, Ibanez TS10 and Danelectro Fabtone.
Has 230v and 6 x 1/4 inch jacks.
It rocks.

ART toob mic pre. I send to it from an aux, or track ****ed up with mine. It's for input and output so you cna drive the toob really hard and not overload the next thing in the chain.

I own the Rack Sans Amp, it does give you distortion, but I am personally looking for something a little slower or softer, like the difference in a transistor amp versus a tube amp.

Sans Amp words. The Culture Vultre is great. The Fullton OCD pedal is great. Overdrive the input of a 1073 is great. I've got had cool results with overdriving the channel line returns.

It all kind of depends on what kind of sound you want.

The UA 2108 mic pre can be cool when overdriven.

Try sending the signal through a guitar or bass distortion pedal. I experimented with my keyboard through a Line 6 distortion pedal and found some really interesting sounds.

Cranesong HEDD. Two different types pf tube distortion and Tape emulation. I use it on every mix.

Is it the PSA or the RBI?

And how is this with keys/synths?

If you guys mean the PSA; can you do synth bass either or is the RBI better in that case?

For fairly cheap, I found a used RSP Saturator that gives you nice tube saturation and distortion. They aren't made anymore but I think they can be found every once in a while on eBay, which is where I got mine. Isn't the SPL Charisma 2 somewhat similar?

Culture Vulture??

Why get all high-tech & expensive?

'Ya want distortion...get a stompbox!

James' rackmount monster is pretty rad...that'd cover all the bases & then some.

For all its faults (including price tag imho) the Culture Vulture IS lovely on drums- the PSA can add to more things (and I like to beef gtrs from the DI this way sometimes too).

The Culture Vultures I've used all had the same problem of being VERY sensative to front panel taps changing the settings. This is only 3 units though.

My fave way of crunching the kit is to screw with a 'punch' mic at the tracking stage- when this is not an option and no CV I overload a 2254 a little in parallel and desk EQ to taste per the track.

Good luck,

it may be way over the top and more than you need, but i've always loved the distortion on the sherman filterbank.

plus.. you get a sherman filterbank!
