Console Cleaning

Ok so i just got this old desk D&R Series 8000 (1982)
and the pots are quite crackly (nearly all of them)

Since we dont have any real console techs here in (N)Iceland i have to try and fix the damn thing myself.

So , how do i go about cleaning a billion pots?

Any specific materials you would suggest or should i just pour some cofffe on the desk and hope for the best?

Since you are reading this post then if you have any info or experiences of this desk or any desk in the D&R range then feel free to share your opinions with me..

Cheers

Don't get the tape-op to do it.

I once gave gave the tape-op the job of cleaning the bantum patchbay. Instead of using the cleaning/isopropol spray with the little bantum cleaning thingy, he spayed it with WD40! It was real fun getting that back to a working condition!

At most computer shops they have anti-static spray/foam which works a treat. Spray onto each pot and work the pot backwards and forwards. Not the most technical way but has worked for me in the past

Arnar,

I'm not familair with that desk. Are the pots sealed or do they have an opening to get cleaning solution to the element/wiper?

I'm guessing because they are in such bad conditon, that they must not be sealed.

If that's the case, I recommend you locate a local source for Cailube CML made by Caig Labs http://www.caig.com. You'll need a large bottle of the 5% CML, a small bottle of 100% CML, and a couple of needle dispenser bottles (like this http://store.yahoo.com/was/rrlotstatdis.html).

You'll need access to the pots (and switches if you choose) from the inside of the channels. There's no way to do this externally.

Using the needle dispenser, apply a generous amount of the 5% CML to purge the pots of dirt and gunk. Then (using the needle dispenser) apply a few drops of the 100% solution directly on the resistive element and immediately rotate the wiper on the pot to spread the solution over the element. You may need to tweak the needle into shape in order to get to the pot's opening.

Repeat this proceedure a billion times!

Good Luck.
