How to route hardware effect in a mixer-less studio

I recently had to make some repairs to my mixer but the repair is equal to the replacement cost. So I decided to do away with the mixer if possible.

Please advise on how to integrate hardware effects into a mixerless studio. I could mix in the box but would like to tread tracks with effecs. I am kind of in the dark ages of this so please held!

Shah

My gear:

Sound mods: MPC 4000 (with 8 out expansion card), Jupiter 8, Juno 106, Juno 60, (a minimoog eventually)

Effects and EQs: Eventide DSE 3000, Lexicon PCM 42, PCM 70, and I will be adding a Roland Space Echo

Machine: Powerbook 1.57 proc.

Basically, you conceptualize the software mixer in your DAW as a hardware mixer, with the analog or digital I/O on your soundcard as the sends and busses. You attach your hardware outboard processing to the I/O on your soundcard and then make your routing choices in the software mixer pretty much the same as you would on a hardware mixer.

The only really major issue to watch out for is latency. This is what can get really annoying when working this way, at least for me.

I bought a patchbay and Cubase SX3 to solve this problem.

If you have a multiple input-output soundcard connect your gear to them via the patchbay and let cubase SX calculate the hardware latency time, for which it will compensate(with their external effects function where you can patch an affect into a track just like you do with a vst effect.) It works quite easy

Similar problem

Don't intend to hijack here, but the first question seemed well answered. I too am a little perplexed about how to get my lxp15 into my real-time digital (digi 001) signal path. Recorded audio will send and return just fine. But not real time. I'm sure there is some obvious thing I'm not understanding.

Not sure what you mean by "real time" but in ProTools what you would do is:

- Connect (for instance) Output 3-4 of your 001 to inputs of the lxp, then connect outputs of the lxp to Input 3-4 of the 001.

- to use the device as an insert, make sure no other tracks have their i/o using 3-4. create a harware insert set to 3-4 on the track you want. that's it.

- to use it as a send/return situation. create an aux track. set the input to 3-4. create sends on whatever tracks you want and send them to output 3-4. you may want to "solo safe" the aux input you've created. set the mix on the lxp to 100% too.

If you mean that you can't hear the hardware device WHILE RECORDING, I think you have to make sure that you're in input mode, and disable low-latency monitoring....(haven't used LE in a long time so not sure if they still have that.)

Yeah, I suppose I meant the commonly accepted definition of real time: currently, a not yet recorded event, etc.

But, it still does not work with my LE setup. I have my latency set. No other thing competing for the output/input.

The manual gives the topic about a paragraph.

I will keep on trying. Thanks.

aux sends and returns

does the unit have spdif on it? i think this would be the best all digital but if not use the i/o of your soundcard/converter

then you have to create a bus in logic/cubase with the proper inputs and outputs selected.....viola! an effect bus inside your computer that doesn't tax your CPU!

cheers
