in the tdm version, they are both 48bit, etc.

I think they will even null when compared

people will swear that they are different, others say they are the same.

I recently debated over and over what to get.

I got the TDM version, because my converters(digi 192i/o) were probably better than the L2s

The AD converter is good, but there are better converters out there for the money, IMO.

I have come to the conclusion that the whole key to the L2 is keeping the threshold high and hitting your converters a little harder don't be scared to see some red lights from some of the transients.

Doing that, I have achieved equal results with both. I used to think the hardware was superior because i seemed to get better results initially for some reason.

No difference in my own experience.
The good thing is that is independent
TDM, RTAS, VST, OS9, OSX, XP.........!?!
You can use it whenever and however you want.
The A/D is not bad, the D/A....grudge

In my tests comparing the L2 hardware vs the software plugin I noticed a great difference on attack dependent program.

eg.: R&b pop mix in which k and sn drums are very prominent in the mix, they sound with less "smack" with the plugin, instead of "punchy" with the hardware version of L2 digitally inserted on to the master fader.

It's not a night and day difference but try if you can ....

Ciao.

I've found pretty wild differences in how the L-2's automatic release will respond to different low frequency eq settings on kicks, snares, etc. This may explain part of why people have such different experiences with hardware vs. software and why amazing amounts of L-2 can be applied to some mixes while no more than a single dB can be used on others. I think it's BOTH just as good as people say it is AND can be just as bad. It can certainly do a lot of harm in inexperienced hands or when used with mediocre monitoring.
