What is that sound? Tool - 10,000 days - Vicarious

What makes the vocals sound like that, is it a reversed vocal or is it some type of wicked reversed reverb? Or is it something I don't even know about?

Old "tape" trick.

Record the track then flip the tape around and spool it backwards. Now the whole song is playing in reverse.

While the song is playing backwards send the track that you want the "backwards" effect on to a reverb of some kind. Take the output of the reverb and record it to a free track. The reverb is behind the backwards track, the track plays then the reverb starts then trails off.

Flip the tape back around the right way and the reverb starts at the trail first, gets louder and the vocal track plays.

Yes this can be done in the box as well but because the new Tool CD was recorded on 2 inch tape I have to assume they did the effect with the above method.
