Microphone experiences

Hello,

I am getting ready to upgrade my Mic situation and I'm just wondering what people find good for versatile use (esp. Vox and Acoustics) in the $500 - $1000 range. Yes, I will be getting a couple SM57's but I'm looking for something else. Any feedback of what works and what to stay away from would be great.

BTW...I'm doing mostly Rock, Pop, etc......

AKG C414 is a good multipurpose mic for $1k. Another IMO great mic, especially for vox and on the kick drum, is the AT 4047/SV for $550.

What about an SM7b rather than 57's.

Have you got a great preamp already???

When you're looking at LDCs, you wont find a better workhorse than the AT4050!

preamp and others

Thanks for the replies...

Yes, I do have a nice pre. It's a Vintech 1272 and I just invested in some Dynaudio BM5A's w/ Tannoy 10" sub. Basically, I'm trying to get my setup out of Prosummer land and into Pro land. Next on the list is the mic. I don't use any outboard compressors or EQ's. Is this a necessary step? Also, how about the converters. I use the MBOX now and I was looking at the Benchmark DAC1 to bypass the MBOX converters.

If you can stretch your budget to about $1100 you can start looking at the Soundelux U195 and Gefell MT71S; both of which are extremely versatile. I would take both of these mics over any of the AT stuff.
