Cavity Rawks! (apologies to wwittman)

I've been looking for insulation to tame some of the low-mids in the vocal booth, and this is the ticket from Roxul.
Best part is the name - CavityRock.

"Clear and detailed down to lows that will make your cavity rock!"

This is a little denser than the 703 at 4.5 lbs/cubic ft. I just wanted to share this for anyone looking for deeper bass trapping. Available in Canada, eh!

So its working well?

do you have it just in the vocal booth or is it in your monitor room in the corners too?

Yes, so have you used this yet 2leod? How's it working out?
I'm going to check out the hardware stores for this "cavityrock".

Yeah, they work great! I got the Ready Traps studio bundle (8 broad band, 4 high freq. bags). I put 6 of the 4" and 2 of the 2" in the booth. What I had in there before was fine for vocals but as an iso booth for guitar it wasn't cutting it. Guitars sound much better now! The main room is in pretty good shape with the existing trapping but I'm going to shoot the room, hang the remaining bags and shoot it again - I'm expecting some improvement.

Michael, I'm not sure you'll be able to find this product at a hardware store, I couldn't get it at the local building supply stores (Home Depot, Slegg's) but I did find it at an industrial supply store. Check with the building supply to see if they can get some in, or put you in touch with your local Roxul rep. I was mentioning on another thread that it only cost me 96 bux (with GST!) for 20 2" boards but it doesn't have any sound absorbtion values in the product liturature. That's only because it's not being marketed for it acoustic properties which is why the price is reasonable (IMO). It's the same as their RXL 40 Board, only it's density is 4.5 lbs/ft³ instead of 4 lbs for the RXL 40.

Doug

cool, keep us posted when you re-measure....

i contacted the roxul folks they'll e-mail me back about where to get it.
I know Bob Olhsson has said:
"Check into the densest rigid fiberglass industrial furnace insulation you can find. It used to be much cheaper than anything labeled "acoustical."."

this is mineral wool right?

i didn't see that on the site, maybe i just missed it

definitley the way to go, its just not necessary to spend big$$ to get performance
if you have the time to DIY

Yeah, Roxul makes mineral wool insulation. I've got the Safe 'n Sound residential insulation in all the walls and ceiling behind the drywall.

Happy trapping!
