Talks a lot, but says nothing. Not a single word on eq's, plug-in's, etc. Only 3-4 compressor settings for typical instruments and that info you can find in every engineer mixing book or in every online topic.

You were hoping for compressor settings?

I think it's more about an approach and attitude. Once you understand the WHY the details are not important.

Compressor settings? You have to know what to listen for. He has a process that I understand having been under the gun, to kick out mixes fast on an SSL, you just go!!

I thought there were several really crucial nuggets of info that he imparted in that interview. A really good watch and I for one am glad that the interview didn't descend into talk about compressor settings and so forth. I'd much rather hear about the mindset and attitude to mixing than any of the technical jargon that anyone can read about online.

Cheers, Mark.

My Recordings/Credits

Easily the second best episode (after the Eric Valentine), even if don't like his mixes that much. Thanks!

+1 really, and like an tracking/mix engineer myself, and as mentioned in this clip (Ive said it in here before) how can you not like the drums in Paramores - Brand New Eyes (which was the album he was trying to recall)

Great show. I agree, once you are past a certain point, it is all mindset and different ways to approach something and not about settings.....could be a pick-up and could be a drag racer. Love it.

Agree!

One thing that strikes my mind is, there´s alot of ppl thinking... ok I need an SSL and some 1176, neves, pultecs.... etc.... but...

...if you´re asking for compression settings and eq settings to make it sound like CLA, you´re way off, like he says... try to find a way to beat him instead! (He has found his way, which he`s explaining here and there, go figure it out and try improve it, at least dont get upset when he is not telling you what he does, absurd)

At one point I think he said he goes overboard with fader moves at LOW monitoring levels......and when you turn it up its really exciting... That is his insight into his style and I like it

I think his mixes are good, but what makes him shine is..

A. He has the ability to mix in a way people like and are use to hearing.

B. Everybody talks about him so he must be good...(mixing is subjective no??)

C. He knows his shit, but there is no mystery... It's called mixing.

Yes, and that is due to his ability to set clients straight upfront and have a process that doesn't fail him. Most top mixers seem to have these common traits. A good team and a consistent process.

Really?? if you want great philosophy with great examples and with lots of knowledge and info, watch the shows with JJP and Michael brauer...the CLA Show was so of the same "I am a badass, I am so good, I am so competitive"...we already know that...

I agree with you, a lot of self promotion and a lot of very basic average mixers talking, nothing fancy, nothing philosophically deep, nothing interesting for a technical point of view.

Move the faders, do not solo the vocals, I am competitive!! come on, we know CLA could share much better things to us.!

So, some of you guys were dissapointed that he didn't tell you all of the stuff he does on music he mixes?
Hearing about how he approaches a mix and his general philosophy is of no value?

He does what the tracks he is mixing call for.
What those tracks require is unique to only themselves.

He is mixing the tracks given to him using his prefered techniques and you are mixing the tracks given to you.
However he sets compressors on the music he is mixing has very little relevance to how compressors might be set on different music.

correct, but the level of how he can explain the philosophy behind his mixing vision is very poor, maybe he do not have the ability to resume and share deep information in a philosophical way as JJP, M. Brauer and others can .... but not even batters box was actually interesting.
