The Echo Effect

Im just looking to find out how to add echo to vocals. I just want that smooth background echo for a little ear candy and to add a little something more to the track. Pretty much what you hear on most R&B and Hip Hop tracks. I'm using Protools MP9 as my recording software.

Thank You

I don´t use Protools, but I´m sure it comes with some delay or echo-plugin. Just experiment with that until you´re happy.

Some very basic things that helps me from time to time: Use HP, maybe LP or even full eq on the effect channel to tweak it the way you want it. Putting a touch of reverb after the delay/echo can make it a little smooth and washed out. Sometimes not staying on the exact tempo of the tracks (1/4, 1/8, 1/16th notes etc. ...) but moving the tempo up or down a little helps too.

No PT here, but tape delay with a bit of chamber verb after works best for me. Since I'm using a real tape unit, I move it around till I like how it sounds.

Using a delay anywhere between 5-30 ms and then rolling off some of the high-end on the echo (12k LP or even lower depending) should work.

You're basically working with the Haas effect. Tape typically sounds nice as a delay but many plugs will work too.

Create a second copy of the vocal track and place it on a new track... and slide it slightly left or right from the original. The more you slide, the more delay. Slide too much and sound sheety... so be careful. This is better than any plugin with no other effects.

HM, why do you think so? Sure, you get one "perfect" repeat, but that´s it. Very limited, isn´t it?
