Thread Starter | Tracking Without a Pre-Amp
A friend of mine played me a few songs that he engineered and produced. They sounded really good. I asked how how bass was tracked and the response was DI straight into a tube compressor. There was no pre-amp. This is one of those things where you know wrong is wrong but the outcome came out really nice. The bass sounded great on its own and really good in the tracks. How is this possible? Is this a poor practice to engage in or is this something that others may do also? This is something that has been bugging me for a bit now and I'm curious what you guys think. Cheers. |

Is the compressor providing the makeup gain?

As long as the output of the DI or mic is hot enough a compressor might provide enough gain. LA-2A for example has plenty of gain at the output stage. I have never tried it though. |

Oh yeah. But like I said it sounded fine and I was not able to tell after the fact. As far as the DI amost, I'm not sure what was used for that. I wasn't there when it was being tracked. No active bass either.

a DI such as the Avalon U5 has line level output as well as mic level. maybe your friend was using line out? |

Active DI's have gain. Even with a passive DI, if your bass has enough ooomph to get your converter peaking around -10dBFS then what do you need a preamp for? Sometimes less is more.

Great advice and I'm sure that you are correct but.......for some reason using the compressors makeup gain to bring the signal up still doesn't seem right.

I use limiters as amps all the time. And with an M149, you can skip pre's altogether.
