hi-pass, individual vs group, any difference?

Hi all

When a number of tracks need low end content filtered out is there any difference in applying one hi-pass filter per channel or applying one on the entire group assuming the same frequency and type will be applied to each? Specifically in a DAW.

My guess is there is no difference, in which case this thread will be short and could therefore be extended with:

"hi-pass everything?"
"analog summing vs digital, when is math not math?" <- My favourate
"white noise, the new vibe"
"which digital EQ?" <- A good one
"Which 2buss compressor?"

and other such little discussed topics.

Correct, as long as the filter is LTI ... which is highly likely.

There won't be any difference but I prefer high passing separately anyway to control how much low end is present on the instrument.

I like to high pass overheads at about 500Hz, snares at 150Hz, guitars at 200Hz etc, so if I high passed all my tracks together I think some things might end up sounding thinner/muddier than they need to be.

In a daw, no difference that I'm aware of. I do agree I'd rather be hpf'ing tracks individually because I don't want to cut out more than is necessary, but that's a workflow/taste issue.

Analog, there's technically a difference: summing hpf'd signals = more available headroom than summing signals that need to be hpf'd. But even then, as long as your gain staging is reasonable, it's not likely to matter.

The other consideration is whether you want to high pass before other plugins that might be on individual tracks.
