Cool Lynx Aurora 8 and Aurora 8/1824 ????

Hi, I want to buy the Lynx Aurora 8 converter, but Lynx has release a newer model called, the Aurora 8/1824 who has trim pots that allows +18 dBu and +24 dBu full-scale trim settings, replacing the +6 dBV/+20 dBu full-scale settings of the standard models. Why would someone needs that much gain? Can I use it in the same application for my home studio? like the standard Aurora 8?

We can't do mastering sessions yet but I'd love to.
My idea is to buy the Aurora 8/1824 for our recording studio for now, and later, be able to do mastering with. Unless I can't use this new version with my actual system ???

Also, what the best sounding digital protocole? The AES-EBU or the Adat option? Because someone told me that the AES-EBU has less jitter than Adat. Is that true?

Thanks a lot:)

I just bought an Aurora 8 yesterday, and was noticing them disappearing from the larger retailers, as in removed from sale completely, after sharp price drops. Now it makes sense :-)

http://www.jrrshop.com/product_info....Csid=3ed2bbbf7

I'm unclear what the difference, if any, will be in overall quality, besides the changed trim settings. The text of the above post says it is offered as an "alternative," and looks like it is for about $100 more price. I'm wondering if the extra money adds up to a couple resistors added on. I've seen gain increases done that way (Hardy M1?) before.

In any case, I am sure I will be very happy with the one I ordered.

I got the PCI solution, but I have other reasons, and I always thought that as long as digital connections were properly done within reasonable quality, then it was basically the same. Dunno for sure, probly has a super detailed expliantion at Lavry's forum, lol.

Does seem confusing...

Phil here from Lynx. Seems to be a bit of confusion, so let me try to clear it up.

The original Aurora 8 and Aurora 16 are still available at their original prices of $2195 and $3295 respectively. There have been no price changes.

At the request of some of our high end customers, we have added the 1824 models as an alternative. This adds $200 to the price of the Aurora 16 and $125 to the cost of the Aurora 8. There are no trim pots, this is a factory modification. The added gain is needed for some specific uses, including interface in some mastering systems. You would not necessarily need this mod for mastering - depends upon your system.

The Aurora/AES16 combination will offer the best possible quality interface. The LT-ADAT allows the user to get 16 channels of lightpipe I/O, but this is limited to 48 kHz (8 channels @ 96 kHz using SMUX).

Hope this helps.

Cool

Thanks Phil,

I have a Chandler TG2 mic pre-amp that has a maximum output of +28db and a Great-River MP-2NV that has +26dbm. I also have a bunch of other gear some which are -10db all wired through the same patchbay with these two pre-amps.

Does this mean that the Aurora 8/1824 would be the better solution? What happen for all my gear who have only a maximum output of +4db or -10db?

Also, can you tell me where I can find an article about proper gain staging and calibration between all the possible ins and outs of all the gear.

Thanks in advance, help me with this, it will make my decision:)

Thanks Phil,

A chat with Lynx and some others confirmed comfort with our original Aurora 8 choice. We will leave the slamming decisions to our ME (EM/Blackwood, oh yeah!--no more LA or Portland for us, grinz).

There would be pros and cons. Supporting +24 dbU at the +4 position would allow you to drive your Pres harder, but the -10 position would change to +18 dbU, impacting the consumer level gear you'd want to integrate. I suppose you'd need to determine which was of greater value to you.

I don't know of a single authoritative internet article. This one, from the Broadcast Industry perspective, is not bad: http://broadcastengineering.com/mag/...els/index.html
