| Gear addict | API A2D with MBOX or 002 I own an mbox and I was considering buying an api a2d to use as a mic pre/ad into the spdif of the mbox....My main concern is monitoring vocals etc... How would I be able to do this without latency issues as the a2d has no headphone out and the input/playback on the mbox will be inactive as it is bypassing the mbox controls... I was considering a digi 002 also but will I have the same issue with monitoring with the 002? If anyone has a fix I would love to hear it as I am ultra keen on the a2d... Thanks Mike |

| I don't have experience with the MBox, but the 002 will do what you want. With "Low Latency" selected you can monitor the SPDIF input without latency. |

| here's a bump on this thread. I just started using the api a2d with my mbox, and while it sounds great, I can't monitor what I'm playing due to the headphone issue. Any ways around this? thanks so much! aram |

| sorry i wasn't more clear!! The api doesn't have a headphone out, so you have to monitor through the mbox. the problem is that the SPDIF turns off the direct/playback knob on the mbox. so while you can hear things when actually recording, if you want to do a practice take, or just play along with something, you can't do it and hear it in the headphones without actually being in record mode and recording. does this make sense? |

| Does the A2D have insert point between it's pre and adc? If yes, then you could take a 'split' of the signal and route that to an external mixer plus route protools outputs to the same mixer (4 channels needed if using both channels of the A2D with Mbox stereo out). Mute the track in protools you're recording and monitor it before the mbox (the split)=no latency issue. Dropping in can be a little bit of a nightmare as you'll have to be muting and unmuting constantly but the latency issue is gone. Hope this helps? |

| Ah OK I get ya. I don't have my MBox here so can't check but can't you switch the input monitoring around? I used to use my Apogee AD8000 via SPDIF and I'm pretty sure I could toggle between Input/Record monitoring. Sorry can't help you more. R.
