So I'm not sure if this is the right place but I saw "music biz politics" as a sub subject so I guess this is as good a place as any.
Anyway, I want to use a sample from the movie Waking Life. I've contacted them (the people at Fox Searchlight who own the rights to the sample), and they are asking for $15,000 per sample, which is absolutely absurd, even if it's standard.
So instead of going that route, I'm thinking about re-creating the sample myself. I just wanted to know if there are any legal problems with doing so. I mean, if you re-create the sample from scratch, can they sue you or something like that?
I or a friend would be quoting some of the lines in the movie. Here is the sample I am talking about.

The actual video doesn't have the music in the background, whoever posted it put that music in their themselves. It's just that one guy talking to the other guy.
