cardioid for guitar room

can a cardioid pattern on a condensor be used to good effect as a room mic for recording a guitar cab. I've only thought of using a mic set in omni pattern for the room sound. I say this because I want to order a higher quality mic that is cardioid only (for use on vocals but would be an added bonus to use as a room).

sure thing ...

try pointing one into a corner ...

if your amp has an open back, you could put it behind it .. flip phase of course .. some people do not like that sound .. some do ..

point it at the floor for a different sound as well ...

may i ask what mic (card only) that you are looking at for vocals .. your vocals or others as well ...

do you have an SM7 ?

cheers

I rarely use omni's for room mics anymore. I don't frequently have access to great sounding rooms though. I tend to use cardioids and use the null to minimize the parts of the room that sound bad. I've often backed a cardioid near a wall and used the null in the back to block out the wall to get the illusion of a larger room. It works pretty well in the right situation. Plus, it's easier for me to place a cardioid room mic as you walk around a room and listen to what's going on in the different areas of the room since your ears act more like cardioid than omni mics.

Consider getting a multi-pattern mic. In figure-8 pattern, there is a null point at a right angle to where you aim the capsule. This means if you aim the figure-8 mic at the walls of the room instead of at the amp, the mic will not pick up any direct sound waves from the amp, making phase problems less likely. Aiming a room mic directly at the amp can result in comb filtering, where different sound waves from different frequencies bump into each other, creating dips and peaks in the response. Aiming a cardioid mic into a corner would be helpful in minimizing comb filtering, but you'd get better rejection with a fig-8 mic out in the middle of the room (or wherever it sounds best.)

I have a royer r-121 that is a figure 8 mic but not sure if that is ideal for room sounds.

Also, do you guys pan the room mic to the opposite side of the mix as the direct mic and leave the delay between the mics as is when recorded. With this method, there should be no phasing issues correct? Or, do you stack them together and time align them, and make sure of phase when recording?

a 121 will work with a pre that has a fair bit of gain ...

try it ... pointing Null towards the amp at 6 feet will give you an interesting sound ... adds some really nice air ... does not always need to be far to create this ...

sure you can use it ... you can use a can and string if you like

IMHO, adding room to a sound would mean not panning separately because that takes the point out of putting the sound in the room it was in ... you can surely do whatever sounds good for the project you are working on ...

rules in music and sound are meant to be broken sometimes, we move forward by doing that ..

cheers

121s work amazingly on guitar amps! instead of using 2 different mics use the 121 and back it off the amp until you get a bit of room in it, find the nice balance between direct sound and room.if you want to play it safe you could get more direct sound and on mixdown if there is still not enough room try parallel compressing it with an 1176 style compressor.
