Dual-usage mixing/performance speakers

Hello all,

I am in a bit of a pickle. My drummer moved away, and my guitarist is basically useless. My band is left with the two creative members - me, the primary composer, schooled engineer, and singer/pianist/synth guy, and the other one, my writing partner/back-up vocalist/bassist/also records the guitar parts.
While we are looking for new non-useless members (difficult in tiny PEI) we still want to play shows, and I am in the midst of recording/producing our first "album".
So my question is this: Can anyone name some relatively cheap, but highly effective powered monitors that could be used both for my mixing, and for being live drum/guitar machine speakers? Basically they would be playing the guitar and drum tracks from the recordings I've made. Loudly.
Second question: Is this a stupid idea?

I need some decent monitors either way, but I would like to try to kill 2 birds with one enormous boulder. Recommendations?

Not going to happen.

Why can't you play your drum and guitar parts off of a laptop through a PA?

That is also a possibility. Problems arise when there is no house PA. A PA is something else on the docket to buy.

So recommend me some economic PAs.

We are strictly bar fare at this point. So maybe 100-150 people tops depending on which gig we land. Generally the bars we would be getting dates at are small. PEI is small and so is its everything.
And less that 1000$
