Mixing with Headphones.

I recently found a great article concerning mixing with headphones from Sound on Sound's website: Mixing On Headphones

After reading it I was curious if anybody in the forums mix with headphones and would like to add their 0.02$ as far as what headphones you use and if you use any sort of headphone amplification. I currently mix with a Denon AH-D1001. Although I've gotten tracks licensed mixed on that set of cans, I'm not too happy with the bass response. I know this is typical with headphones, but I am noticing extreme differences in the low end when monitoring on a pair of speakers as compared to the headphones.

I use the Sennheiser HD 800 (open) and the HD 25-1 (closed) and the Grace m903 monitor controller (DAC / headphone amp. that also controls active monitors).

I use the Beyerdynamic 990s and they work for me. It's more of a I know them so well situation than perfect translation. I listen to a lot of stuff through them and I suppose that's the key for any monitoring system (including speakers).

There's a huge thread called Best Mixing Headphones which is worth looking at.
I mostly mix on headphones too, and agree getting the bass right can be the hardest part.
And like the article say's, it's very helpful to have some speakers to make sure things are sounding right.

I too have been mixing with headphones for some time (HD800, DT770 Pro, K271 MK2), but lately trying different monitors I'v found bass frequency issues with my headphones mixes.

I guess it's ok to mix on headphones as long as you do a check on monitors aswell.

i mixed a track on headphones once.. some krk something or anothers. thought it sounded great. took it back to the studi.... no bueno!!!! of course i was not use to them, it was my first time, blah blah blah. i just do my editing and setting up my mixes at home on headphones now, then take them back to the studi to do the actual mix. I'm sure i could learn them in time, but i just don't have the time to do so....

I usually mix rehearsal recordings on my headphones and the results have been surprisingly good so far!

This was recorded in an old barn with 8 (cheapish) mics and mixed on the spot on my BeyerDynamic DT770 Pro's.

John Willett, I am Jealouz of your setup. I checked out the massive thread "Best Mixing Headphones" that was suggested I look at and I see that you made a post on there and even referenced the link I put up here. Haha. Like I said I've been looking into upgrading my setup and I think I'm going with the AKG702s and a little dot i+ hybrid headphone amp. I've heard good things about this combination.

The AKG 701/702 and the Sennheiser HD 600/650 seem to be the best choices at that price range and seem to come out pretty equally in popularity.

I don't know the Little Dot, but do hear nice things said about it.

Reference Mixes

Mixing with headphones shouldn't be an issue if you're using reference mixes. I like to A/B my mixes with commercially available songs in the same genre. If I can get my mixes to sound like they do (or better) in the headphones, then it should translate well to other playback systems.
