EQing for ringtones

Hey,

We've had discussions here about including ringtones on an enhanced CD that we're doing for a festival that our artists are playing at. Anybody have any experience with this? Any special EQing needed for crappy cell speakers? Any software/format suggestions? We're exploring the possiblity, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

We where one of the first bands to offer this (BTW, kids go crazy over this stuff). Here is what the FAQ say, hope it helps :

The ringtone sounds pretty crappy on my phone. Is there anything I can do?

Short answer: Hopefully. Long answer: We try to send the ringtone in the best format for each phone, but sometimes we don't get it quite right. You can always try some of the other ringtone formats we have available.

Verizon V3 Razor - Try MP3
Samsung A900 - Try AAC

Just go to the My Account page and select a different format from the Preferred Ringtone Format list, then follow the link in the original message to download the ringtone with the new format. If you have already deleted the original message, you can just go to your homepage and resend your ringtone from the Recent MyxerTones™ list.

If you find a ringtone format that works better for your phone, please let us know so we can update our software.

They all lack low end, so make sure your mix works with a 250Hz HPF on it.

Other than that - good luck.....

Most people listen to music on their cell phone through head phones...I wouldn't worry too much about mixing for 1" speaker

If the ring tones are to be ordered via OTA, your service provider should - and probably will - do a “hand set recognition” of the clients cell phone and send the appropriate format.

My little brother's a corker for this sort of thing. He pulls apart all sorts of stuff - rigged me up a mobile phone handset that has a jack to get into the speaker. Way cool, I just patch into it. Only good for tru tones, but there ya go. He also has a collection of the vibrater motors that he hooks up to batteries to do all sorts of things...they are mega tiny. Hit your local pawn shop.

I guess I'm not hip.

I thought ringtones were used to indicate an incoming call - not listened to on headphones....
