Apogee AD-8000

Should I be concerned about buying an AD-8000? Is it something anyone could repair if something goes wrong or would I have to send it to Apogee? I hear they charge a lot.

My AD-8000 has worked flawlessly forever, and Apogee has great customer service. Call them up and I'm sure they'll try to answer your question.

One caveat of the AD-8000 that they don't advertise is that it doesn't play nicely with unbalanced gear.

Ditto what RKrizman sez: it's still a good sounding converter, tho tops out at 48k. Mine have been workhorses since I bought them 8 years ago.

It's better to buy them used anyway - WAY less money on the used market than they were 10 years ago, and tho they're 'legacy' items, Apogee will still service them and have fast turnaround should anything happen, tho I suspect nothing would.

One other comment is they have a fan so they're not totally silent. The fan noise is pretty quiet but when in a silent CR, you'd hear it (ever so slightly). Most converter designs run hot, and need a fan anyway...

Best with it,

Thanks guys, I think I'll get one. Do you know what the difference is in the SE version?

The SE I think is the 'better' one, that was designed to have more of an analogue flavour to it.

yep - the SE has better conversion in the A/D, and I think in the D/A as well...

Worth it if you can get it!

I just bought an AD8000 and ended up getting rid of it for an SE model.

i find the SE to be much improved and worth the extra cash(it has a better, more quiet fan w/ switch, newer firmware version enabling it to work w/ HD rigs, and the updated analog section.

Go for the SE! These boxes used to go for $8k just 4 years ago.. now they are less than 2k.
