UPDATE: Setup for "ambient rock drums" / video studio diary!

hey guys!

in a few weeks i will start recording a full length LP with a band that plays some kind of mid tempo "ambient rock" like ISIS, explosions in the sky, russian circles sometimes sigur rós mixed with 90s influences like Pumpkins, Placebo, etc.

we decided to record in another studio because my recording room is not big enough for that kind of project so we will rent a friends studio on the countryside with a 70m2 recording room with 5 meter ceilings.
beside that under the house (the house is about 500 m2, i guess there are 10 people who live there) is a really huuuuuuuuuuuge cellar!
its about 1.000 m2 and parts of it have 11m high ceiling!
its not sure but allegedly a few decades back the cellar was some kind of a beer brewery of a local beer brand until they changed their location!
anyway,...
its my first time in that studio and the equipment is also different to my setup so i for sure will try to benefit from the possibilities there!

here are the lists of equipment that i bring and the studio owns...

my stuff

Lynx Aurora 16 + rme HDSP pci card
Dangerous D-box
Dynaudio Bm5a

Focusrite ISA828 preamp
Universal Audio LA610 channelstrip

AKG c414(2*)
Sennheiser MD421 (2*)
Sennheiser MD441
Beyerdynamic m260
Shure Beta52
Audix D2,D4,D6 and I5
T.Bone RB500 ribbon mic (2*)
Shure Sm57
Shure Sm7
Beyerdynamic M201TG
NS10 Sub

studio list

Apogee AD 16x
SPL monitor controller
Yamaha NS10
Adam A7

API 512c (2*)
Chandler TG2 abbey road edition preamp
Universal Audio Twin Finity preamp (5*)
Universal Audio 6176 channelstrip
Acousta Analog Mixer (12 channels)
ADL tube compressor

AKG c414(2*)
AKG Solidtube
AKG D12
Neumann TLM170
Shure Sm57 (5*)
Shure SM7
Shure Beta 52
Shure KSM32(2*)
Sennheiser MD421 (4*)
Sennheiser MD441
ElectroVoice RE20
AKG D112

and so on,...

i cant remember all the equipment but i think that should be enough!

my plan is to record big, natural, dirty and roomy drums!
so close micing with loads of room mics and drum ambient tracks.

my plan so far,...

kick in - RE20 - chandler TG2

kick out - NS10 Sub - ISA828

snare top - sm57 or m201TG - chandler TG2 (maybe with the ADL1000)

snare bottom - md441 - ISA828

Toms - md421 - ISA828

HiHat - beyerdynamic m260 ribbon - UA LA610 channelstrip

Ride - dont know - UA twin finity

Overheads - C414 - API512c

closed ambience - RB500 ribbons - UA Twin Finity

Mono drums - Neumann TLM170 - Universal Audio 6176

Room mics(MS) - AKG c414 - UA twin finity

any ideas?some advice?
would be great to get some feedback!
thanks a lot!

cheers

hey!

i would like to share my experience of recording the upcoming release of a band called LEHNEN from vienna, austria.

for the last 10 days we recorded the upcoming LEHNEN album @ S.T.R.E.S.S. studio in Graz! we have chosen a different studio than mine because we wanted to live there for the time of the process so that we can totally focus on the work without any extraneous influence!

it was a little challenging in the beginning because i brought my own recording equipment and while i setup my workstation it seemed that someone (me) unwittingly switched the setting on the lynx front panel.i spent hours to find out what was wrong but it was classic, i checked everything except that one button on the lynx. 5 minutes before we decided that we have to find an alternative the last thing i tried was switching that one button and yeah,...problem solved!
that was really frustrating but after that we got started!

it was the first time i recorded with a big (ca. 70-80 m2 with about 4m ceilings) and it was really a "aha experience". the recording room in my studio is about 22 m2 with 2.70 ceilings. the drums sounded sooooo good from the beginning and the room sounded really good!

it was also my first time using hardware compressors.
one was the 6176 Universal Audio channelstrip. i used it with a neumann TLM170 as a mono mic behind the drum!
that was the my first "wow" because it sounded so much more organic than any software comp.

during vocal recording we used an old ADL1000 comp together with the neumann and a api512c preamp.
that comp totally kicked ass!
to me personal it was completely new kind of "sound", not to say that it was exactly that kind of organic, authentic, smooth sound that i was always looking for!

good experience!
