Thread Starter | Non-matched pair of Oktava MK012?
Hey all, just a quick question. I'm looking to pick up a pair of used Oktava MK012's for around $300-400 (or cheaper if I can find them, but its not looking likely). It seems that every matched pair I find is already sold or selling for significantly higher than this. There are a couple people on Ebay selling non matched pairs, however, and I'm not sure how much of a difference this makes. The two microphones are the same model (both silver bodied MK012s, in separate cases, both with cardioid caps). Will these be usable as a stereo pair, would you imagine, or should I wait and try and snag a matched pair? I'm hoping to use them for a recording project in mid-August, so it would be good to get them ordered as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Alex

More than likely they are fine, I've had a non-matched pair of MK-012 for years now with no discernable difference in sound between them.
Enjoy! It's a wonderful mic.

The pair I bought from MF back in '01 was $90 and not a matched pair. Yes I could hear a difference between the two. One had a higher output than the other and the weaker of the two also had a little more distortion in its circuit. That certainly didn't keep them from being useful though, I compensated for their difference in output level at the preamp stage. No problem.
When Joly started offering his 012 PE mod I sent the weaker of the pair to him to upgrade the components on the mics pcb. Now it more closely matches the other 012 and its distortion issues have been smoothed out of course.
Don't worry about the mics not being a matched pair, you can compensate for that. And if you can spare the coin somewhere along the way, it's very beneficial IMO to have the PE upgrade done by Joly.

Why not order a new pair from Thomann in Germany? I just checked and ~$344 including shipping to the US.

I can only speak for the matched pair as I have 'em
with all the capsules plus the fig8 adapter as well,
matched pair come with nice hand written papers with all the tests
and results, curves etc.. I don't know if the difference between
un-matched is audible but the matched pair are pretty awesome.
PS: get the omni capsules, they're super sweet

IIRC not long, think they were here at my door here in Japan in a few days. Thomann is probably the biggest supplier in Europe, super-efficient and reliable. Also they def. only stock genuine Oktava. If you can find the extra $$ get the 6 capsule set, I did and had them Joly-fied at a later date too, money very well-spent.

But do consider the Joly mod at some point, it's not a subtle difference!
