Mackie ONYX 1640i - two newbe (unseen, I guess) questions

Greetings,

This is my first post here.

I'm reading a lot of good reviews about the Mackie ONYX 1640i, and I'm getting tempted to buy it. However I have two questions:

1. Is it compatible with Adobe Audition 3.0?

2. Will it run with no latency on a pre-historik laptop like an Asus A6VA?

Thanks in advance!
Cheers.

i guess its compatible with audition....its a usual firewire interface...so why not?

i think even such a laptop will be able to record a stereo sum in 44.1/24 ....just minimize your buffersize for monitoring latency reduction!

cheers

1. You do not have to worry about software being compatible with interfaces.

Software talks to the asio drivers in the operating system that talks to the hardware. They dont communicate directly so there are no incompatibilities.

Only Protools used to be hardware-specific, because they used that as a copy protection dongle.

2. There is no such thing as NO latency (electrons take a finite amount of time to get through any device), but asio drivers make latency so small as to be virtually undetectable.

HOWEVER.... how are you going to hook them up?

Generally you need Texas Instruments firewire chips for all interfaces and most laptops dont have them anymore.
The review I read on the ONYX in Sound-on-Sound said it was particularly fickle about needing TI chip firewire....
