Can I add a pair of mic pres on the mixer out?

Dont know much about all the technical specifics of all your guy's gear but I was wondering the following.

We are currently using a digital mixer outputing live to FOH. technically if we wanted to warm up the output of the mixer couldnt we stick a pair of MIC preamps on the out of the mixer before going to the amps?

please excuse my newbiness

Yes using a mic preamp can add some nice analog saturation, but as the previous poster mendioned, you will need to pad down the signal as a the line output of your digital mixer will distort going directly into the mic input of a preamp.

The other option is using a mic preamp that also has a line input.

You could, but I wouldn't.

You won't notice a difference unless you have one hell of a pa, and if you have said pa, you most likely have a decent console which won't be cold and digital.

Buy a graphic eq with some transformers. Klark 360s, bss 960s (I think that's the model) are fantastic choices.

A great stereo compressor with transformers would be a better option as well. There are too many of those to list. Don't use a strapped pair of DBX 160s though, they are absolutely horrible for 2 bus compression duties...

The Avedis line pad z not only changes the output level (-35 db) but also changes the impedance from 10k to 150 ohms. It is specifically built for your application. I use mine all the time for adding color / distortion. It's just another way to alter your source material. I've noticed that all of my preamps will alter the sound in some way. It depends on the style of music your vision and what you are trying to achieve. It's fun.
