MXL 990 capsule swap and headbasket mod

This weekend I swapped the stock capsule on an MXL 990 with an RK-47 from microphone-parts and removed the two inner layers of the headbasket. I posted some pics and some sound comparisons to a ksm32 and bluebird.

I don't make any money from my site, there are no ads or anything. I just thought it may be useful, especially the audio comparison.

WOW, that was a very clever way to compare. I could really hear the differences between the three microphones. I bought the RK12 capsule and used it in the RODE NTK and of course swapped the tube and it also made a huge difference. I was wondering what the 47 can do and now it is very clear! Thanx again.

Very nicely done! Reminds me why I like the BBird on acoustic guitar... but not so much on vocals.

Very nice Foolhardy. I've been thinking about doing this myself with my MXL990. Maybe I'll do that after I upgrade my Pro VLA with some transformers.

You should also change the ceramic capacitors if youre able to. I modded my 990 recently (same capsule) with same mods but with the capacitors and it was a huge difference. I also put on about 4 thick rubber bands wound twice around the base of mic. I also have a bluebird, and for my voice I preferred the modded 990 but electric and acoustic guitar I preferred the bluebird. +1 on the modded mxl 990 being a great mic to mod and sounds good on a lot of sources.

My (self-)modded 990 is the most beautiful mic I've ever heard in person.

Probably my next 2 mics are gonna be 990's.

For about a week I researched capacitors and eventually decided that finding them all in one place (to save shipping) was too difficult , so I gave up. The installation part would not be a problem.

I didn't really comment in my initial post but I for acoustic I prefer the ksm32 or the modded 990. For vocals I think I prefer the modded 990. Granted, the "sound" that I shoot for is folky, warm and not very bright. That being the case, sadly, I don't find myself using the bluebird very much.

Me too, my plan is to try them out on overheads.
