Final mix loosing imaging and depth using SPDIF

Hi,
I am mixing out of a Digitlal mixer. My mix sounds great. I then am recording my final mix to a stero channel on Digital Performer. I am coming out of the Digital board spdif out into the spdif in on my Motu 2408 MKIII. I monitor back by setting up the output of the stereo channel that is open for recorded info and send it spdif out to one of the digital spdif inputs on the digfital board. The spdif input on the digital board is 24bit. When I monitor back and forth fromthe main mix to what is being recorded there is a slite difference. I hear the imaging change, loss of depth especially on the low end. the reverb tails sound a little shorter. All this stuff i svery minor. You have to listen carefully to hear it. but I want my mix to sound exactly the same sa what I am mixing. It should not change the mix I thought. I thought a digital setup like this did not convert the audio. please help
thanks

sounds like it could be a wordclock issue to me.

Unless you are using a master WC generator which locks all your signals to the same clock you have to make sure that the recording medium is Master and the sending one is slave. Is that digital board properly locked to digital performer ?

does it sound messed up if you burn it to a cd from digital performer and listen to the cd?
