If you had 20,000$ only!

Can you please suggest a configuration based on DAW(or not?) not including space, keyboards, modules or acoustics, for 20,000?
mixer,ourboard?,interface?monitoring etc

Aim: 24 track tracking and mixing

My friend,
For 20k, you have a lot of options. What kind of music will you be recording (genre). Will it be live instrumentation, or midi with a bunch of vsti's?

Sure, I'll try!!

Digidesign 002R Interface ($1200)
Digidesign Command 8 Control Surface for PT ($1100)
Genelec 8040A Monitors ($2100) OR Dynaudio BM15A Monitors ($2400)
Coleman Audio M3PH mkII Monitoring Controller ($900)
Mytek 8x192 8-Channel A/D/A Converter ($3200)

Great River MP-2NV Dual-Channel Mic Preamp ($2150)
API 3124+ Four-Channel Mic Preamp ($2600)

Great River EQ-2NV Dual-Channel Equalizer ($2750)
Manley Variable Mu Compressor/Limiter ($3600)

Audio Ease Altiverb 5 Convolution Reverb Software Plug-In ($500)
Antares Auto-Tune 4 Pitch-Correction Software Plug-In ($300)

......whoops that's already $20k and I didn't include the computer!!

of course you may also want:

Empirical Labs Distressor with British Mode ($3000)
GML Model 8200 5-Band Parametric Equalizer ($5400)
Dangerous Music 2-Buss Analogue Summing Box ($3000)
Universal Audio 1176/LA-2A/Purple Audio MC-77 ($2-3k)
InnerTUBE Audio Atomic Squeezebox ($6500)
Tube-Tech SMC-2BM Mastering Multiband Compressor ($6600)
Manley SLAM! Stereo Limiter & Mic Pre with A/D/A Converters ($8200)

and it goes on and on and on...... $20k is not a lot of money when there is slutty gear to be purchased.

Anyway these are just thoughts, however you SHOULD have:
1-2 good mic pres
outboard compressor
good monitors
monitor controller
superior converter
some software

Cheers,
J.D.

cool gear list....dont forget you will need some mics.
Id suggest an HD24XR or other similar "decent" converter set up, echo audiofire nothing 2 fancy. Maybe pick up an Allen & Heath MixWiz plus a DAW, maybe running cubase. Also you would probably want to add the UAD cards, so figure another $2000 for cards and everything out and stuff that they will release soon.
Get some AT40 series mics and the usual 57s,58s,sm7b,421s etc and a Dynaudio monitoring set up
With all the cable, headphones and stuff your nearing 10K depending on how many mics headphones and other stuff you need to have at the same time.
You could add a few "super channels" with outboard comps and nice pres, maybe a quality 2 channel converter to use for main tracks and master word clock module and still have some money left for renting studio time for mixing. Dont forget to leave money in the budget for rentals.....
If you plan on mixing OTB then I would just rent studio time, 20K isnt gona yeild the results you are looking for tracking/mixing otb. You will have to constantly add on to the rig over time. I wouldnt bust my nut right away anyway, just get esential items that you need to get the job done at first. Dont get envolved with digidesign unless you plan on upgrading soon or want very expensive cheap crap or your shelling out for the 192 for some reason IMO.
