Vocal mics at chest height

I saw a pic of Sarah McLachlan with an M149 at chest height.

Do you guys ever record vox like that?

But the M149 is a pretty big mic. Wouldn't it be blocking her chest?

I've done similar things with a woman who really needed as much chest tone as possible with her voice. It did help.

I haven't done it but I've heard Bono records his vocals with a mic at chest height with a Shure SM-58.
