Focal CMS 50s, Genelec 8030As or Neumann KH 120s?

Hi,

I am trying to decide upon some desktop monitors for mixing and near field listening (at ear level, on some isoacoustic stands toed in about 36" apart at ear level with about 36" to my listening position about 1" off a wall behind them). At the price range that I am considering, I am looking at the Focal CMS 50 ($1,390 pair) or the Genelec 8030A ($1,578 pair).

Both of these monitors seem very well liked among 5" monitors. I see that they have different porting schemes (front for Focals and rear for Genelecs). The Focals have more power 80/50w vs. 40/40w for the Genelecs. While they have similar frequency responses, the Genelec have a tighter tolerance (+/-2 dB vs. +/-3 dB). They are quite similarly sized, but the Focal's are much heavier 17 lb vs 12 lb.

I am interested in sonic accuracy and their ability to image a sound stage. Which of these would you recommend and why?

Thanks,

Bob

Be sure to listen to both with your own ears. Other people's opinions can help, but only a little.

I chose the Focal CMS-50 + the CMS Sub over similarly priced systems because I think the Focals are more revealing. I think I hear more details and problems in the audio, the other speakers seem to smooth things out and make the music pretty. For work, I need to hear the ugliness so I can fix it.

If the Focals really do have that much more power than the Genelec, then you might find that the Genelecs are underpowered.

However, all good speakers sound different from one another, so I think you just need to get used to whatever you choose. Great mixes are made on crappy NS-10s and even Auratones!

Jay,

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Focals. Since I am listing at approximately a 1 meter distance, the difference in power between the set is likely not of practical importance. Having an opportunity to audition a pair of either will not be easy. I can audition Focals if I am willing to go into Manhattan and looking at the Genelec website I do not see a dealer network just links to regional sales/distribution. This is why I was reaching out to owners here on the forum.

I also see that Neuman KH 120s are at a similar price point to the Focals and the Genelecs. They, like the Focals are front ported. My home studio will only place about 1' from the back of the monitor to the wall. I am wondering about getting disprortionate bass with a wall being so close on a rear ported monitor like the Genelecs?
