Silence Cases ?

I'm a long time reader / lurker but I've posted very little .
Just trying to learn .

I'd like to ask for opinions or experience with " Silence Cases " .
That is , cases that house a computer and silence the noise it makes .
They also cool the computer .

I believe I could get a case that would contain a Radar unit and a computer .

Does anyone know if they work ?

Are they a good idea ?

Thanks for any feedback .

FWIW,

I have one of Elias' Silence Cases: it does what it says - makes a BIG difference with my G4 (hoover). But if you want it to substantially knock down sound AND keep external drives inside (i.e. firewire/USB etc.) cool, it doesn't do that sufficiently (IMO).

It's a nice case - certainly tones down the noise from my G4, but I worry about heat and circulation issues re: firewire drives up top. They are hotter than a pistol to begin with, and I could fry an egg on them after a few hrs. in the box, so...

If I were to have the option, I'd go for a separate machine room, and keep all noisy machinery in there. There are too many other things that make substantial noise in the CR - best to see if you can eliminate them all, not just the computer...

Either that, or have a complete "iso-box" for all fanned equipment. These options are spendy, and unless they have direct injection of 'cold' air, I tend to think they'd be suceptible to the same problems...

Hope this helps!

I've got an acoustilock cabinet in my studio a few years back and couldn't be happier with it. Cuts noise to a non issue and keeps the gear at 5-8 degrees above the ambient temp of the room by using a heat-pipe passive cooling system.

We have a case made by Whisper Rack.

Great build quality, it looks really nice.

However, with a G5, 4 192s, an expansion chassis, a Big Ben, sync I/O and a Midi I/O, it was getting to be about 110 degrees inside.

Our tech put extra fans and tubes and ports in the case, and now it's down to about 93 degrees.

With all of the extra fans to keep it cool enough, it's still a hell of a lot quieter than it would be in a normal case.

The G5s are just so damn hot...

I've got a g5 dual 2.5 with 2 400g drives, 3 192s all with the extra a/d cards, sync i/o, rorke AVR SCSI bay, Magma 64bit expansion chassis. Without any modifications, the Acoustilock cabinet hovers around 80 degrees. Which is about 6 degrees above the ambient temperature of the room.
