The UA 610 Family

I realize that the UA 610 pre amps are a love them, hate them sort if thing and I have been currious about them for some time now.

I had the chance to spend the day with the new Solo 610 and I really liked it, especially on electric guitar (with a 57 and a 121).

Anyway what I am not crazy about is the design...

I would prefer a rack mount device.

Can anyone who has tried both let me know if there are any "sonic" differences between the solo 610 and the older m-610.

Thanks,

PV

Ok I found some posts which claim that the solo and the m-610 are identical, except that the solo is missing the eq section and someone pointed out that it has no line input, which confuses me as the solo has a DI input with a paralel out for running inline with an amp.

What is the difference between the m-610's line in and the solo 610's DI in ?

The M610 had a DI, as well, no?

The difference is that one is a DI input for HiZ sources...and one is a (balanced I assume) line level input.

I certainly wouldn't worry about the lack of line level input on a preamp.

If the circuits inside are the same, I'd venture I'd rather have the Solo, as both gain stages are full range knobs--where the other 610 family have a stepped (-10, -5, 0, +5, +10) first gain stage.

I have the LA610, which has more capability re:EQ...but, I still wwouldn't miss it if it were gone--so long as there was a HPF. And there is on the solo.

I've been eyeballing the Solo610 myself, since I rarely use the LA610's compressor.

One thing that seems to be missing on both the m and solo is the 15dB pad that the 6176 and LA610 have. As the 610 pre hasn't the largest headroom it can be very useful.

Since neither gain stages of the Solo 610 are stepped, the pad is not as important. Dial in how much grit you want with the gain knob and then set your output level.
If you still experience distortion, switch the pad on the mic or pick up a swtichable Shure in line pad. Everyone should have a couple of those anyway, they are very useful tools.

I have a solo 610 and it DOES have line in. There is a switch on the back to switch the xlr IN from line to mic. And it also has unbalanced on the front Input and a di out to a guitar amp for example.
As far as powering a ribbon mic it has 62 db of gain. I would think since they used alot of ribbons in the 60's when it was designed it would be perfect. But watdoIknow. Don't have any ribbons to try.
I wish I had 2 it sounds that good. But like I said watdoIknow. This is my best preamp. My next best is an Art prochannel. So...
But I did order a 10 and 20 db inline pad for it. Because using it on a kick drum I have the input gain way high and output really low to get a good undistorted signal. The knobs pointers are basically pointing at each other. Gain staging is a little different on this than I am used to but the sound is excellent.
