Monitoring Cable | Balanaced Stereo to Mono XLR concern !

Sup Everyone.

I would like to know more about the Balanced Stereo cables used for sending mono L and R to monitors.

For years I have always used good cables. I am just finishing the new studio space here and ording in the cables i need for it. And it got me thinking about the whole thing.

I have read its best to use MONO cables only and also read that stereo no different.

Personally I feel should mono is better as it must be convereted to mono at the end anyway..

Are there any "cable heads" out there who can explain to me the Facts about it.

Cheerz

There are no such thing as a balanced stereo cable. If you have a cable with three connectors, you can either have unbalanced stereo or balanced mono.
Balanced stereo equals two balanced mono cables. At least in my experience.

This was what got me thinking of it all again...

So your saying this Van Damme stereo cable they use is now used as balanced Mono ?

Is that how it works?

Sometimes Trs connectors are referred to as stereo to differentiate them from TS connectors. You could use a TRS to carry two unbalanced signals, or one balanced signal.

What connections do your monitors offer, and what is the output?

You'll probably want to run a balanced connection with one cable of the type you linked to going to each monitor.

My Monitors have Balanced XLR F for the input.

Ok. I think i get it...\

Are there any dodgy things to look out for when ordering cables regarding Balanced? Other than the price of course....

I have used Mogami in my old studio, but they are pretty expensive and i need to order them into the UK..So i will have what i need made up for me, and i dont want them made incorrectly.

Sure you could make one with a 5-conductor cable, it would usually have two connectors on each end. I've seen them for some headphones.

The only dodgy thing to look out for would be hooking it up right. What is the output for your monitors? Be sure to match +4/-10 settings correctly. The inputs and outputs will be one or the other (check manual), or have a toggle switch.

I thought I had... The device sending signal to the monitors (interface, monitor controller, mixer, whatever) will have a calibration level. It will be either +4 or -10. The monitors will also have a calibration level. It defines the level the unit is expecting to send/receive. The manual for each unit will tell you which one it uses. Or, some units have a switch that lets you choose one or the other. Set them both the same. Use +4 if you have the option.
