What's the background from Say (all I need) from OneRepublic?
For those who don't know, that's this song.
One Republic - Say (All I Need) [with extended beginning] - YouTube

Most obviously the beginning is the area of focus. What on earth is that? Is that just some very fancy editing with a vocoder and Auto-tune?

I've been curious about it since it's one of those things where I really don't know how they did it.

Sounds like some type of vocoder or synth through an arpeggiator.
