Vocal processing on "The Killers" album.

Really enjoyed this album..put the vocals really stood out for me.

They sounded like he was talking out of a loudspeaker, but yet, very natural.

Is it a mix of original vox and and mix of a track of some distorted and maybe reverbed with a extremely short tail? Or could it be something else?

I won't speak to the use of effects on this album, but I will say this, because I think it is so relevant to why this album is as good as it is.

The singer...DELIVERS! Every performance, on every song, is sung with passion and conviction. No processing can do this. I really like "Hot Fuss" its been in my CD player since January and hasn't gotten boring yet.

It has been in my Cd player too. I totally agree, the emotion on the album is great. I think that they really captured the energy of playing live. BTW, they were on Austin City Limits a while back and they put on a great show. PBS re-runs it every now and then.

I think the effect your thinking of sounds a little like it could have come for a Roland space echo?

It could also be re-amping of the vox track into a live room, with some really short plate verb on it and delay...

It's a very interesting effect that fits the musical vibe perfectly. Notice how it turns on and off too...only uses it to emphasize things.

That's what your talking about right?

It sounds to me like there is some distortion over the whole record, like the mixbuss was sent in parallel to two overdriven transistor preamps. That's what sounds unusual about the vocal to me, but it's all over everything to my ears.

BTW, I love it too, great performances, real emotional urgency.

Not to hyjack this thread, but the same guy did the new Sounds record and it sounds phenomenal - drums in particular. Every track has a different drum sound - the gating especially is really perfect.

Anyway, check that record out if you haven't.

Joy Devison / New Order 'megaphone' vocal distortion (with deadpan, monotonesque vocal delivery) is all the rage here in the UK with the 'NME" "haircut" bands. At least the Killers singer combines it with actual singing and some great, melodic hooks..

yes gsilbers, its not ampfarm... we didn't/the mixer wont use any ampfarm...

we spent hours getting guitar sounds for each song... we had 9 amps set up and so for each song, we'd try out different combination of amps!

Because Alan Moulder will be mixing the record and he was also tracking.. he recorded everything the way he wants (unlike with their first album where somebody else tracked it)...
so yeah, all the basic tracking and overdubs were all going to tape no EQ.. just the right mic and right kind of compression on certain things...and the rough mixes sound great!

I guess if you're trying to get that vocal sound, u just gotta hire ALAN MOULDER!

Could someone please point me to a link to the Sounds?
I've heard great things about this bands and can't seem to find anything online.

Cheers.

- Would you mind giving us more info? My bass player loves the "Duran Duran" bass sounds - unfortunately he's decided to buy a chorus pedal

SO as far as the "amped" sound of the vox, its echo farm with the mix knob to 100% but not using the actual echo repeats, just the filtered output?

I've done that with Logic tape echo plugin, and it sounds very cool as a thickener... And that's not a modelled sound, so it must be even nicer with the modelled version.

There's something so generic about the Sounds. The record is like the killers record in terms of production value but the songs seem so standard issue... melodies are tired, the parts are used and it's not like they're doing anything different with it. Yea, the Killers are doing Duran Duran but they're just different enough to keep it interesting. I can't get into the Sounds. I love the album cover though, 'cuz you know, I like boobs.

I don't think we've got an answer to the original question yet. You can hear it really strongly in 'All these things that I've done.' It kind of reminds me of a less intense version of the effect on the vocals in 'Magical Mystery Tour' and 'I am the Walrus.'

You should've heard the first record, then. You would've pulled your hair out. Haha.

On a b00bz note, I know one of the girls on the cover. Not too well, but I figured it was worth a mention. Wow that smilie is silly.
