Mineral Fiber blasting out of brand new Yorkville YSM1p monitors

Hello guys, I need help, fellow YSM1p owners, Yorkville representatives, is this normal?

Wads of mineral fiber are blasting out of the port of one of my Yorkville monitors; so I got a flashlight, and looked into the port of the other monitor, and you can clearly see exposed mineral fiber at the end of the port. I assume, if enogh air moves, mineral fiber will blast out of that monitor too. So, I don´t know, am I supposed to be breathing mineral fiber every time I monitor loud music? Shouldnt the mineral fiber be contained somehow? Have I got faulty monitors? Please, someone, enlighten me.

Isn´t this sort of fiber supposed to be hazardous to one´s health?
I ain´t no scientist, but I was under the impression, that we are not supposed to be directly exposed to fiberglass membrane.

Thanking those of you who may be able to help me,

Johnny Plant.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say "no".

Check the product literature.

Seriously though, I doubt it's fibreglass or anything hazardous. Which is not to say that it's 'normal'! You should get 'em looked at - I'd be more worried about why all that crap has come loose in the first place.

. I've had damping filler blasting out of my old Paradigm Reference 3-ways for years. Although a few particular rounds of Fleetwood Mac and Richard Thompson at 120 dB cleared them up quite a bit....

I liked when a long piece would get moving in rhythm, just flashing in and out of the port, like a tongue

I use YSM1p's in my writing studio - I think it is the the best sounding (read - my rough mixes are translating) bang for the buck powered set out there for under a G. If you are still under warranty you should contact the Y-ville folks and they will get this taken care of promptly. Their customer service is great.

cheers,

(and I don't work for them or anybody for that matter. i just like it when products overdeliver...)

I have a passive pair and they definitely do not puke out the dampening when pushed.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback, I am currently awaiting for a reply from both Yorkville and www.musiciansbuy.com

Yes the monitors are supposed to be brand new, I mean I got a discount because they were "open box, brand new perfect condition, non factory sealed", so, other than the fact that it was an open box order, they are supposed to be new, not used. The incident happened on the first couple of hours of usage. I installed them, started playing around with my triton, and on some bass frequencies in which you could see the woofers working, the incident ocurred.

Colin, just curious, dampening isn´t blasted out of your speakers, but let me know, if you take a peek at your ports, can you actually see the dampening material at the other end or not? Same question for meteor.

Hey, I just wanted to note that there are a lot of misconceptions about mineral fiber being "hazardous". I certainly don't want to breath the fibers, but more has been espoused this that might be neccessary..

Just to alleviate any fears here, give this thread a quick read: http://recording.org/ftopict-21013.html

Cheers,

Hmmmm. If I recall you can see the fibre, they are actually at a friend's right now as I leant him them for a short while. I'll check them out when I get them back over the next few days.

Have any of you had any issues with audible vibration/rattle around 120-170hz?

You see, if I were in the U.S. these monitors would have been back at the store last week, and I woul already be enjoying a new pair; but being in Panama (Central America) I would have to pay in excess of $200 just to send the speakers back to www.musiciansbuy.com in the U.S. for an exchange. So i'im trying to sort this out if possible without having to take that step. But I guess if I have to I will, and i'll be $200 poorer, but at least i'll have working monitors. In the meantime I'll try to find if there's a cheaper way of sending them back to the U.S.

Shouldn't they pay for the shipping?

But don't get me wrong, these monitors sound great and are quite revealing, that is why i'm so depressed, if I could at least hate them, but i can't because they sound so good, but obviously mineral fiber blasting out of them, and a rattle around certain frequencies, can be EXTREMELY disctracting.

Try getting ahold of Yorkville up here in Canada directly. They would probably help you out. Here is their international rep, give him an e-mail: junior@yorkville.com

Nope, you see, since I needed expeditious shipment, I had them brought to Panama from Miami through a third party shipping company, so musiciansbuy.com shipped them only to Miami, therefore their responsibility is only to pick them up in Miami.
