I'm not Rob but there are a lot of great U47 clones out there for a decent price.

Although not a U47 clone the CAD M179 is a great "affordable" mic that I love on Tom's, Kick & Guitar.

Hey Rob, thanks for staying plugged in to this epic post and answering everyone's questions so graciously. Enjoyed following the progress of your MCI; totally reminded me of my home remodel.

I've been through the whole thread and enjoyed the tale of GBV's How's My Drinking. Really love the guitar sounds all the way through Isolations Drills. Would you mind sharing some details around the guitar set ups? The overtones come through so clear without being piercing. Very musical.

Hmmm thats a hard one.
A bit foggy but i'll tell you what i remember.
Bob played thru an AC30 or AC15. Maybe it was a 330.
Doug gillard was some blend of les paul hi watt marshall.
With some solos thru a mesa that i cant remember.
Nate was a tel thru a laney AOR.
There was also a DR Z KT45 AC50 DR103
I think there were both h watt and marshall cabs around.
Teles, les pauls, sg jr, 330, riviera 12, J50, epi texan,
Sister I Need Wine was 4 acoustics
Around a 67 in omni. Then doubled.
Thats what i remember.

Yeah funny, it was sort of a similiar hell to doing a home remodel,
Except it took way longer.........
but now its just memories and stories.

There is still one more final wave to do to the console and then its done.
The EQ mod was quite outstanding.
We had circuit boards made And added an eq board to each module with inducters and expanding the eq, freq wise. Also john musgrave then designed a simple relay replacement bardand we had those made and replaced all relays with these new ones.
That got rid of a bunch funkyness.
And made console from module to module waymore stable and sonically similiar.

Thanks for the info on Iso Drills. I've never been able to catch the overtones from any setup the way you guys did on some of those tunes.

Also, the harmonium on The Enemy was an inspired choice. Makes the end of that song just, huge.

Got a name for that board yet? Seems like it should have a name after all you went through.

Well there is three types of great pickups being recorded.
Tele P90 humbucker soerhaps thats part of the overtone thing you talking about.
Could also be how the inversions or chord voicings are stacking or a combo of that.
or none of the above......
Every song has this basicsetup as it was everybody playin live,
Including bob.
I wish i could remember more. Just cant seem to jog the memory.
I know on The Enemy the good take had a crash that cracked on the outro
And we just went with it because it was obviously the one.
Could,ve overdubbed a cymbal but we ended up needing the tracks for strings
Or something cant remember. But listen to it and you'll notice evrytime jim goes to hit the crash it is barely there.....

Awesome. I'd always thought he just sorta laid out on those hits, but it makes much more sense now, given that the 'missing' note was always on OHL.

Three more questions if you're up for them. First, did you stick with the standard 57/occasional 67 setup on the guitar cabs?

Second, do you recall the setup for vocals on the Eisley record? Really curious if any of Michael Joly's creations saw some action there.

Lastly, what was it like to work with Booker T and the Roots? I'll hang up and listen.

The way i remember it is its al 57's on the electrics.

Eisley vocals i think was a 67 APi distressor LA3A

I didnt acutally get to work with the roots.
They recorded for a week and then i got the sent the tracks.
The songs were kinda long form jams with motifs and melodies.
I had to take the weedwacker to it and give it shape and form and whip it into something.
It was quite an interesting endeavor.
