API A2D Sync with Focusrite?

Dear Folks,

I'm thinking of adding an API A2D to spice up my guitar tracking and vocals. I have a Focusrite Pro 40 - a decent piece with very good monitor routing. So - I'm thinking of keeping it (also handy for 8 channels of drums) and using the API A2D for 2 channel recording (guitar and vox, two Vox, two mikes on a guitar cabinet, etc).

Here's the question part. Focusrite Pro 40 syncs to SPDIF, and enjoys a SPDIF IN AND OUT. API has SPDIF (not in or out - just labeled SPDIF). In Logic Pro I can select a different input device from output, but they need to be sync'ed. Can I use the SPDIF sync to sync them? I think Logic want's Word Clock - but will Logic settle for SPDIF and does the API generate it?

Another way to go at this, for almost twice as much $, is to get myself the API 3124+ Discrete 4-Channel Mic/Line Pre, plus DI, AND a Focusrite Octo-Pre II. This would get me 16 channels input, more of that good API mic pre- but maybe not the A/D upgrade?

Is the API A2D A/D better than the Focusrite Saffire range?

Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

I would guess that the A2D probably has better converters without being able to A/B them. You probably want to run s/pdif out from the A2D into the Pro 40. The Pro 40 can probably be clocked from the A2D and that's probably how I would do it. You can select a sync source for the Pro 40 in the mixcontrol software which should be set at s/pdif at that point you should be pretty much in business. Also make sure to set the sample rate on the A2D and in the mixcontrol software to match. Then just choose the s/pdif input in logic, and output to your monitors. This should get you started, it's hard to tell you exactly how things need to be configured to get it going without having both pieces in front of me but hopefully this gets you going. If it doesn't maybe we can work from there.

the saffire converters are pretty great, but I love API stuff. just what King said, I'd go into the API then to the 40. I use one too and love it! As long as you know the monitoring software it should be a breeze
