record outside?

I am supposed to record this girl singing the national anthem this weekend. It will be used by her to get gigs singing at games for the Panthers and the Bobcats (no jokes please) next season. I have a dead little room with a low(8ft) ceiling. And I was thinking about setting her up on my back patio. If I can keep my dogs quiet it should be ok. I just have never done it before and I wonder what it will sound like. Have any of you done stuff like this before? What tips or suggestions can you give me. Or should I just do it inside.

I think its a great idea to record her outside. Send her voice to a PA or amp and grab some bounce off the trees as well. I have played around with delaying this track against the straight vocal to create an even bigger space.

The neighbors wouldn't dare complain for fear of being labeled unpatriotic!

Either way would be fine - just make sure that everything is clear.

You are selling her voice (I assume she is pleasant to look at, which helps). So get a good, slightly flattering vocal track with a little background accompaniment if she uses any.

Keep her away from that anthem from up north - it's not nearly as hard to sing and doesn't show off a good voice as well......

The only thing he said was he is recording a girl - based on this we know she is alive and female - so, yeah, must be nice to look at

Sorry, musta missed something...record her inside. Why outside ? I did a whole album ouside and we had wind (oh yeah, satan in audio form) planes, animals and ramblers asking random directions all over that shit. And we didn't even have to contend with the noise that people who live near other people have to contend with. I'm all up for vibe, but why torture yerself..??

I think Brendan O'Brian records drums outside sometimes. I'm sure it's not a new trick; I'd guess the benefit is that you can put whatever ambience you want on it as long as you're in a pretty wide open space.

I did an Anthem audition for someone who was trying out to sing at a Rangers game. We doctored it up to sound like she was actually at the Garden - even put in some walla and cheers at the end. It helped get her the gig.

I would imagine an outdoor vibe would help land an outdoor gig. Even a little wind noise. It might inspire her, especially if you had a PA hooked up.

Thanks for the link. That's an interesting read. The more I think about it the more I want to try it outside. It can't hurt to try. It's only a 2 minute song maybe we'll do it both ways a few times and see which one sounds best.

Any tips on dealing with wind? Does useing a wind screen effect the freq response of your mic very much. I don't have a real high end mic but I'll use either my 414b-uls or an Apex 450. I also have an older baby bottle but I don't know about that one.
