I have 2 that I like a lot and use regularly and 2 that I've used in the past but I don't own.

The 2 I use in my studio are the Beta57 and the CAD M179. These 2 sound dsitinctively different, but both are strong contenders.

The other 2 I like are the Beyer M201 and the Sennheiser 441. Both are stellar options as well.

The Telefunken M81 has been killing it, I haven't tried the M80 but either would be amazing. I like the Beyer M201 for a less beefy option.

i5 on top and an Oktava MK012 on bottom. Sm57 and sm7b work great as substitutes for the i5, but I really like the MK012 on the bottom. Come mix time, I use more i5 than MK012, but the 012 just gives it the clarity to really stand out!

I like a Heil PR30 on snare. A tad unconventional, but you should try it if you get a chance. I also heard good things from a Lauten Horizon (They sound good on everything)

Lately KM84 for me.

Do a search though -- this thread has been done many times, and all the usual contenders get mentioned repeatedly... Should be a poll. Or a sticky...

heil pr22>Avalon 737 on the top and an Audio Technica ATM35>Gap73(tt modded by zen pro audio)>ART tube comp on the bottom out of phase has been my latest happy choice for pop/rock.

I've enjoyed it on the bottom, but for me, it tends to live on the hat to be honest...

My Recordings/Credits

SDC for more neutral/faster sound, for rock or pop I'm recently discovering SM57 on top for the second time and I like it (SCA N72 helps to appreciate that microphone) more than M201 or 441. On the bottom 441 is nice.

Used a Beyer M160 on snare recently and loved it! Mic held up just fine throughout a 3 day tracking session. Might of just beat out the ol' 57 as my go-to.

The 57 is timeless, the audix i5 can sound good on fatter snares, and the sennheiser e906 is equally at home on snare or guitars. sounds killer on both!

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but when you use SM7s on drums whether it be snares or hats, do you keep the foam screen on and do you boost the presence switch? I tried the SM7b on hat once and it didn't wow me.

On hat, I boost the highs and cut the lows(no foam). On bottom snare, it's actually mic'ing the edge of the snare with lows untouched and presence boost engaged(with foam, but not the round one).

e609. Everything that's good about a 57 but better. It must have a more even pattern because it's less placement sensitive on guitar cabs and picks up a more balanced sound of the head and shell on snare

I'm happy with the SM87 I got recently, it gives a sappier sound than the SM57 and catches more of the overall sound of the drum, rather than just the top head.

AKG D19. If it's good enough for the Beatles, it's good enough for me.

Still haven't found anything that I like more than a good ol' SM57 on top of a good-sounding snare.
