Mogami Gold cable

For anyone who might care, I was wondering if more expensive mic cables might be worth the dough. Your sound's only as good as your weakest link and all that. Read all the arguments about it, decided to just buy some and listen.

Tracked some acoustic guitar and some vox with my normal, generic, middle of the road XLR's and the same parts with Mogami Gold XLRs.

I thought I was perceiving a slight (really slight) difference in tonality, but they were different takes, so it was unscientific. So then I ran Black Keys "Everlasting Light" through both cables, played back the two versions simultaneously and flipped the phase on one and, what do ya know, complete null.

Good. Didn't want to spend that kind of cash on cables anyway. For the cost of a few of those buggers, I can get another decent mic.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

P.S. Doesn't mean I think Mogami cables are poor quality. They're made well and have a lifetime warranty. They just don't sound better. Or even different, for that matter.

Agreed,when comparing to average/good quality $25 cables.
I have all Mogami gold for the studio but sometimes need to get out the extra Rapco(rental quality)cables and frankly,if there is a difference,i can't hear it.
I can hear the difference when the singer is having a bad day though.

Can't say the Mogami sounds better, but I once I brought some tracks to a studio for mixing and once loaded up in the PT session they pointed out the excessive noise of what were midi orchestral tracks. WTF? So the engineer lent me his Mogami cables, had me go home to rebounce those tracks...which came back crystal clear.

Granted, I was bouncing those tracks through generic store brand cables...didn't know any better. But I've taken apart enough cables to see that the Mogami ones are shielded better than most. IMO.

Given your info,i think you did something different the second time or the cables you used the first time were wired incorrectly or defective in some way.I have recorded many tracks with typical store-bought cables and never once had noticable noise.
The difference between a $60 mogami cable and a $20 dollar store bought cable is just not that noticably different.
