stereo image not correct - SPDIF out

Pure accidental discovery. I was listening to a song on my speakers at a VERY low volume and noticed most of the song is on the Right side. Switch to headphones, the same thing. When the volume is up, the problem is less obvious. Long story short, I figured out that the problem was most likely the SPDIF out on my firewire interface... Is that even possible? Could something like SPDIF fail? How do I test it out to be 100% certain b4 I send the thing back to England for repair?

Not possible.

The problem lies in the device following the interface. What is driving your headphones/speakers ?

Well, normally it's the d-box. But in this instance, I've ruled it out. The headphone was directly plugged into the interface.

could it be a bad/cheap potentiometer somewhere? the volume pot on my central station remote does that too.

If you hear the problem in the phones, which are plugged directly into your interface, then how could it be a problem with the S/PDIF output?

Yes, this is a volume pot problem. It's very typical on a cheap interface. That's one of the advantages of having a high quality volume control like the one on the Dbox.

I asked myself that too. But my interface (Orpheus, in this case) has software control panel that allows me to route any output to headphone. When I route Analog Outputs, no problem. Route Digital Output 1/2, problem. My SPDIF(digital out) normally goes to the D-box DAW input. That was how I noticed the stereo image issue. When I hit "SUM" on the d-box, the stereo image was fine. And when I disconnect the d-box and monitor via the built-in headphone on the Orpheus, I could hear the problem is there. So it's not the D-box, I guess? Again, it's more obvious at a very low volume, like 7 o'clock. Sorry about the rant, thanks for trying to help!

You could have something set wrong in your Orpheus headphone mix.

Send your Orpheus config file to tech.support@prismsound.com and we'll take a look.
