Hey Slutz,
I thought I would share my thoughts after having installed it and used it for the first week.
First of Kudos to SSL. Absolute quality in every sense of the word!
The dream of controlling Logic 9 as my recorder with out ever using a mouse has arrived.
I still need to use the mouse to open Logic 9 at this stage, I have not figured out how to that from the board yet lol.
Now i know what you cats talk about when you say once you try a console you never go back, sure it is not a full blow console but man this thing is a beast in every way.
I don't often brag about gear er choices I have made, but I had to on this occasion just in case any of you cats out there are looking at this thing or even doubted at all.
Was a little overwhelmed to begin with as I had never worked on an SSL before, but man it is so damn easy. If i can do it you can, In less then a week I have allot of it covered.
Honestly I feel like a pilot behind a spaceship, damn i can only imagine what one feels like sitting behind a 40 channel. Damn.
You often hear once you try console you never go back, and this and that about a console, I can confirm it is all true.
Consoles rock!!!
No hype at all, I can even rest my weight on this thing while working with out flipping it ha ha ha.
The sound, well awesome, summed some audio and just awesome, width space and punch all there.
I have connected some outboard to it, and using it on the Matrix is as simple as inserting a DAW plugin.
I was controlling my API 2500, 527's all from the Matrix java application, I even had chains going in no time.
Again brilliance in every sense of the word. Well done and thanks.
My only complaint to SSL is your IPMidi software this took a while to get right, not sure what the deal there is?
Also I think I may need to buy a switch from SSL to have both the internet and the SSL Matrix plugged up to the same computer. Not sure about this so if anyone knows the deal here let me know. Once i plugged it up using the network cable I lost my internet connection making it a nightmare to register the damn thing.
Anyway thanks for letting me share and I hope this is useful to anyone looking at this thing.

Congratulations on owning a great SSL board. I would love to own a Matrix along with an X Rack full of EQ's and stereo bus compressor. As you found out, there is also a certain joy in using something of this quality. You feel like your working more with a studio than a piece of software (DAW) with a mouse. If you get a chance, please put a photo of your studio with it, I would love to see it though it will make me more jealous too.

For sure some pics up tonight!
Yeah I have a few X-Racks on the way fully loaded ha ha ha
But yes it is amazing, I mean the way it feels working on something like the Matrix in terms of less mouse and less looking at a damn screen! I mean i always though the console stuff was just hype nah what I mean, no way it is all true plus more! I have found a new respect for audio production and engineering thanks to this thing!
Yeah I am very happy with it hey!! |

I would like you to know something about the SSL support team. Kudos, outstanding service.
Damian from SSL is just a wicked guy.
He gave me a buzz last night whilst he was here in Sydney working on some SSL Seminars.
I was so taken aback to get a call from Damian to be honest.
Apparently Vincent from the SSL support team let him know I was having a couple of issues (nothing major), more of a USER issue then anything and not a fault with the Matrix as such.
Anyway Damian called me and spent more then 1 hour on the phone with me trying to get it all sorted for me and of course we did.
I consider this to be worldclass service and I am so grateful for the call.
Well done SSL I can't thank you enough for the support you have offered me!
Thanks again and keep up the great work! |

Slutz,
I'm seriously considering getting an SSL Matrix, and this being the latest thread on it, I thought I'd post here rather than opening a new thread.
I am doing a major studio upgrade sometime in the next year or so, which could really be considered a brand new venture since it will include building a new space. I've been dabbling in recording since 1997, with a series of home project studios and remote recording ventures, and also went to recording school.
Since I already have microphone preamps, it really makes sense to get a console without them, since I'd route around them most of the time anyway. I'd love to have some analog EQs, but could go with 500-series or X-Rack for those. I have a M-Audio ProFire 2626 and ProTools M9. I'll probably upgrade it to Pro Tools 11 when that comes out. I'm thinking of skipping 10, because MP9 fits my short term needs, and ProTools 11 is going to have a different Plug-In infrastructure (triple format AAX), and is going to be available in 64-bit.
Anyhow, could any owners of Matrix give their longer term experiences? Do you feel the board was a worthwhile purchase? Do you enjoy the workflow? Does it sound as great as the short term reviews indicate?
As a side note, I can get 10% off the Matrix through a dealer coupon (or through asking for a bid from other dealers), and a 35% tax credit from the Stimulus bill (section 179 of the US tax code), so the net price will be around $13,000, which is pretty darn affordable.
Cheers,
Harley.
