RME UCX & Digi 002 Mixer...is it possible?

Hello, sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I usually just research and find what I need, but to no prevail this time. Basically, I've been away from the audio world for a little while (found a new passion in photography and videography) now I'm getting back into my true love. I'm waiting for my RME UCX to come in and I was just curious is there anyway possible I could use it as an interface and the 002 as my mixer.

I know I could use the 002 in standalone but that would kill the automation from the board and I would still have to run audio thru the board, correct? Then I believe I could just bypass the converters on the 002 with the UCX and just use the 002 as my PT Interface, in that case would I still be able to use Total Mix or would the UCX Just be my AD/DA converter in that case?

Basically, I'm just trying to get to a point where I could just use the Faders and automation of my 002 mixer (I really don't care for doing it with the mouse), but all the audio be routed to the UCX and bypass the 002...if not possible then I will just throw it on ebay and make a few bucks. I would just try it if my UCX where already here but it's not til Monday and I'm just trying to kill my curiousity. Thanks for your time.

Hi RC305, I hope I'm not too late. Just out of curiosity, what recording software and what type of computer (Mac or PC) are you using? I have a Saffire Pro 40 audio interface and an old M-Audio Project Mix which also have faders and it actually looks some what similar to the Digi 002 mixer. I was curious too about using the M-Audio as a controller only with out routing any audio through it. I'm currently using a PC and Protools 10. My PC has 2 Firewire ports. So this is what worked for me:

I simply connected each audio interface to a different firewire port. In Protools, I selected the Saffire as the "play back engine", and the M-audio as controller. Everything worked out as planned.

I ran into your post because I'm considering updating to the RME UCX. How are you liking it so far? How much improvement have you notice from the Didi 002?

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense, I will try that and the UCX has USB so I won't have to use up two FW ports. The UCX is in route to be delivered by Tues so I will let you know the improvement from the 002, from what I've read already it should be a pretty big step up. Also, I am Mac Pro and still running PT8 but I will have to download the crossgrade from avid for PT10.

No can do - if you're not using the 002 as an interface, you can't use the faders. Unfortunately!

Wow! that's a bummer. Question though, when you use the 002 as an interface, do you have to actually go into your "peripherals" settings in Protools and assign as a controller? Or does it do it automatically?
While using another audio interface, I'd try selecting it as a controller from the setup>peripherals>midi controllers>Hui , unless it's been tried already with no results. Just a thought.

Yeah, please let me know about the sound quality of the UCX. It looks like it should sound very close to the UFX.
